Today’s news summary – Paper Talk
Tuesday’s front pages continue the celebrations for the Lionesses – who won their first major trophy on Sunday, beating Germany 2-1 in the Euro finals. Most papers feature images of the triumphant Lionesses – who attended a brief celebration event in London yesterday.
The ongoing Tory leadership race continues to dominate the papers, as former rivals Liz Truss and Penny Mordaunt are pictured smiling together, following Mourdant’s public support of Liz.
Tory leadership – Mordaunt supports Liz
Truss and Mordaunt’s appearance together at a hustings in Exeter on Monday came as Mordaunt publicly backed Liz Truss to be the next prime minister – declaring her as the candidate of “hope” reports the Daily Telegraph. The paper says Penny Mordaunt’s support was a surprise – given “the acrimonious briefing war that erupted between the pair during the earlier stages of the leadership contest.”
The Times says Mordaunt’s support is “a significant boost” for the Truss campaign, especially as a new poll suggests that the race against Rishi Sunak to become PM, is tightening.
The i says Boris Johnson is blaming the 2019 intake of Tory MPs for contributing to his downfall. The paper quotes a friend who says Boris Johnson believes the group spent too much time on Twitter tather than forging party allegiances in Westminister in the early months of lockdown. It left them “flaky” and “with less loyalty” to their leader, the source adds.
But members of the new intake reacted angrily, one told the paper that the PM is a “narcissist” who didn’t know half their names “when he got into trouble.”
BA cuts short-haul Heathrow flights
The Times calls BA’s suspension of sales of short-haul flights from Heathrow “another blow” to holidaymakers. The sale ban is set to last for at least a week.
The paper warns that the move could push up prices, but it also says it will help stabilise BA’s operations – and reduce the risk of disruption caused by overbooking.
England’s Euro win in pictures
Most of the front pages feature an image of England’s women’s team celebrating their win with fans in Trafalgar Square.
The Metro declares the winning footballers “dancing queens”.
The Guardian says “everyone is buzzing” – as the “seismic win” reverberates across the nation.
The Daily Mail says their Euro triumph has left the Lionesses hungry for more, while the Sun declares the team have “the world at their feet”, as they set their sights on World Cup glory.
The Daily Express and the Daily Mirror agree on one thing, that they should be honoured by the Queen. Give them gongs, they say.
