Today’s almanac, November 22: the farewell of the Iron Lady

Today’s almanac, November 22: the farewell of the Iron Lady

On 22 November 1990 Margaret Thatcher announced her resignation as Prime Minister and leader of the Conservatives. In the challenge for the leadership of the party, by just four votes, he had failed to obtain a 15 percent majority over his challenger Heseltine, the minimum required for immediate reconfirmation. When he also lost the support of his cabinet, he decided to step back.

Some called it “a rare coup at the top of British politics”. Born in 1925, the “Iron Lady” remained in power in the United Kingdom for over eleven years. The first woman and certainly one of the most divisive figures to have occupied the office of prime minister. So much so that it still causes controversy after her death: recently (a couple of months after taking office) Labor Prime Minister Keir Starmer decided to remove Thatcher’s portrait hanging in Downing Street, causing the ire of the conservatives.
