Tinder’s new ‘matchmaker’ feature lets friends and family recommend profiles

This is either sweet news, or a horrifying way for your mum to get involved with your dating life.

Tinder has set up a new feature, called Tinder Matchmaker, to help people find better matches – via their friends and family.

Users can now invite people, whether they have a Tinder profile or not, to view and suggest potential matches for them.

It means your parents, siblings or mates now have the opportunity to suggest people they think would be good for you, directly in the app.

The power is still with the Tinder user though, as only they can send likes. And don’t worry, Grandma won’t see all of your past messages or be able to ‘use’ your profile in other ways.

‘For years, singles have asked their friends to help find their next match on Tinder, and now we’re making that so easy with Tinder Matchmaker,’ says Melissa Hobley, chief marketing officer at Tinder.

This is how it looks (Picture: Tinder)

‘Tinder Matchmaker brings your circle of trust into your dating journey and helps you see the possibilities you might be overlooking from the perspective of those closest to you.’

A study from Stanford University done in 2019 revealed the number of couples who’d met through friends has decreased dramatically, thanks to online dating.

Perhaps this new feature can help add a personal touch to online dating that single people are craving and missing.

That is, if your friends are sincere enough to make genuine suggestions over joking about your profile.

    How Tinder Matchmaker works:

A Tinder Matchmaker session can be started directly from a profile card, or within app settings. Users can share their unique link with up to 15 friends in a 24-hour period.
After following the link, the matchmaker can either log in to Tinder or continue as a guest.
Matchmakers have 24 hours to play cupid before the session expires, where they can recommend profiles for the Tinder user.
Once the session expires, Tinder users will have the opportunity to review the profiles their matchmakers’ Like for them. Profiles that received a Like from a matchmaker will be marked as a ‘recommendation’.

Tinder isn’t the first app to ask loved ones for dating support. This summer Badoo launched a ‘Family-Approved’ feature, allowing our nearest and dearest to big up our ‘best bits’.

Hinge also includes the prompt ‘my BFF’s reasons for why you should date me’.

Sometimes, we all need a bit of help.

Tinder Matchmaker is available now in the United Kingdom, United States, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Spain, Thailand, and Vietnam, and will be rolling out to Tinder users globally in the coming months.
