A stabbing at a kindergarten in south-eastern China has left six people dead, including three children.

The attack happened in Lianjiang town, Guangdong province, at around 7.40am local time (11.40pm on Sunday GMT).

News agency AFP reported that the other three people who were killed in the incident were a teacher and two parents.

Local police said a 25-year-old man with the surname Wu had been arrested at around 8am.

They described the stabbings as a case of ‘intentional assault’.

The ages of the children and adults who died in the attack have not been released. One person was also left wounded.

While incidents of violent crime are rare in China, there have been a number of mass stabbings reported around the country in recent years.

In the Jianxi province, which borders Guangdong to the north, three people were killed and six injured in a kindergarten knife attack last August.

Officials said a 48-year-old ‘gangster’ stormed into a private nursery school in Anfu county while wearing a cap and a mask.

In April 2021, another mass stabbing at a kindergarten in Beiliu City resulted in the deaths of two children, with a further 16 people wounded.

Kindergartens in China are typically attended by children between the ages of three and six.

A teacher and two parents also died in the attack.
