The Golden Girls Take Manhattan DX – Persona 6 eat your heart out (pic: Twitter)
The TV adaptation that everyone/nobody has been waiting for is finally due out this Christmas, as The Golden Girls take Manhattan.
While the success of The Last Of Us is certain to lead to a host of new TV adaptations of video games, video game adaptations of TV shows are still uncommon. There was a never decent Game of Thrones game, no one’s ever been able to make a good Doctor Who title, and we’re still waiting for that Mandalorian tie-in, but what is on the way is The Golden Girls Take Manhattan DX.
The game is entirely fan-made and unofficial – which means whoever owns the rights to The Golden Girls is going to sue it into oblivion – but the makers have attempted to avoid such problems by promising it’ll be free when it’s released this Christmas.
The developers openly admit that it started as a joke, and a parody of both The Golden Girls and Japanese role-playing series Persona, but the team apparently fell in love with the idea and decided to turn it into a real game.
The concept goes all the way back to 2019, but according to developer Joey Pagano, ‘What started as a joke has quickly spiralled into a playground of ideas meant to explore just how much we can push our skills and retain our sanity with our own brand of humour.’
‘Simply put, this is Persona 5’s gameplay replaced with the context of The Golden Girls. There is no reason for why we used that coat of paint other than ‘how far can we take this joke.’
That joke involves a lot of very Persona looking combat, dialogue, and a lot of rolling about in 3D environments that don’t really look much like Manhattan. There’s also far too many clowns around for our liking.
There isn’t really a proper website for the game, just a single page on Pagano’s site, so we’re a bit worried it’s still just a joke and it’s not really coming out at all, especially as he talks about a demo being due in 2021 – which never happened.
If nothing else though it’s a fun trailer and at least this means there’s an actual chance a Persona related game could release this year, given there’s still no sign of Persona 6.
