The worst video game of 2023 looks to be Skull Island: Rise Of Kong

Skull Island: Rise Of Kong – is this real life? (Picture: Twitter)

A new King Kong game has received some early awards buzz, with some of the most amazing graphics you will have seen all year.

As hotly debated as the best game of the year might be you never really find out what the worst is, because it’s usually just some low rent indie rubbish on Steam, that nobody’s ever heard of. But 2023 looks like it might be different, thanks to the stunning(ly bad) Skull Island: Rise Of Kong.

Rise Of Kong was never officially announced, it just got leaked by Amazon one day and was assumed to be a 2024 release. But it’s not, it actually came out this week. Although that took everyone by surprise, as there’s not even any user reviews on Metacritic – let alone ones from critics.

We now feel duty-bound to try it out though, because those few clips of the game that have appeared online look shockingly bad, to the point where we can barely believe they’re real.

Those poor souls that did buy the game have variously described it as ‘a complete scam’ and ‘low effort shovelware,’ with one person on Twitter suggesting that, ‘King Kong deserves better than whatever this is supposed to be.’

The cut scenes seem to be especially bizarre, as they only appear to be partially animated, with the whole thing seeming not only unfinished but as if work on it has barely started.

This costs 40 dollars and is made by people that make low effort shovelware with big IP franchises.

It’s so bad that you’d think it impossible in the modern day and it makes it clear that there’s no quality control going on at all for the online stores of PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo.

The game is £34.99 but there’s also a Colossal Edition for £39.99, which allows you to change the colour of Kong, use one of eight film grain filters, play a boss rush mode, and watch behind the scene content. Or alternatively you could just flush a £5 note down the toilet.

The game is by little known publisher GameMill Entertainment and the even more obscure developer IgunaBee, whose highest profile release before this seems to be fellow licensed game G.I. Joe: Operation Blackout.

The game is supposedly a prequel to the movie Kong: Skull Island but considering that’s seven years old at this point, it’s not exactly the hottest of properties – so few are likely to buy it on a whim.

Although nowadays licensed games like Spider-Man 2 are usually of a very high quality, the other main contender for the worst game of 2023 is also a licensed title; but Rise Of Kong actually looks considerably worse than The Lord Of The Rings: Gollum.
