International Travel: the US dashes British hopes for travel
The United States has confirmed US travel restrictions will not be lifted due to the growing threat of the highly contagious Delta variant.
The news that existing restrictions will stay in place has dashed Britain’s hopes for travel to the US this summer. The current rule bans non-US citizens who have travelled to the UK in the last 14 days.
White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said: “Given where we are today… with the Delta variant, we will maintain existing travel restrictions at this point.”
She added: “Cases are rising here at home, particularly among those who are unvaccinated and appear likely to continue to increase in the weeks ahead.”
The US currently bans most foreign travellers who have visited the UK, the 26 Schengen nations in Europe and those from Ireland, China, India, South Africa and Brazil from entering the country.
The US is continuing to urge its citizens to avoid travel to the UK following a rise in cases and pushing for more Americans to get vaccinated as the vaccine rollout slows down in the US.
