The Repair Shop’s Steve Fletcher had hysterical concern over Jay Blades meeting King Charles III

The Repair Shop star Steve Fletcher has revealed the amusing concern he had about his co-star Jay Blades when they filmed the show with King Charles III.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that the monarch is set to appear in a special episode to mark the 100-year anniversary of the BBC.

The team – which includes Jay, horologist Steve, ceramics expert Kirsten Ramsay and furniture restorer Will Kirk – were invited to Dumfries House in Scotland to meet the then-Prince of Wales so they could fix two valuable items that he’d picked out.

The items in question were an 18th century bracket clock from the collection at Dumfries House and a piece of pottery made for Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee by Wemyss Ware, a renowned British ceramics company founded in 1882.

On Friday’s Lorraine, Steve spoke to stand-in host Ranvir Singh about what it was like to meet King Charles, recalling how he made them all feel at ease.

‘We were nervous before he came in, but as soon as he came into the room, he just, he’s got this air about him that just made us all relax,’ he recollected.

‘It was just as if he was a friend that we’d just be talking to. It was just a lovely, lovely time.’

Ranvir speculated that it might have become ‘too pally at one point’, as she asked whether the people who were there supervising had to step in to remind The Repair Shop stars that they were in the presence of the then-heir to the throne.

Admitting he had a particular, hysterical concern over Jay, Steve responded: ‘It did get very pally. And Jay, he’s a very touchy feely guy, and I thought, oh my word… but it didn’t matter. It was so natural and normal.’

During the episode, which is due to air on BBC One later this month, viewers will see the King give Jay a tour of his estate.

He’ll also share details about The Prince Foundation’s work in training specialists in areas such as blacksmithing, stonemasonry and wood carving.

Jay spoke about what it was like to speak to King Charles, stating: ‘You’ve got someone from a council estate and someone from a royal estate that have the same interests about apprenticeships and heritage crafts, and it is unbelievable to see that two people from so far apart, from different ends of the spectrum, actually have the same interests.’

Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV. The special episode of The Repair Shop will air on October 26 at 8pm on BBC One.
