Windex at the ready as the first trailer has dropped for My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, and the gang are reconnecting with their roots.

We were first introduced to the iconic Portokalos family when the original film premiered in 2002, following the build up to Toula’s (Nia Vardalos) whirlwind big day.

The third instalment in the beloved franchise is slated to be released later this year, and will follow everyone reuniting following the death of patriarch Costas ‘Gus’ Portokalos (Michael Constantine), as they fulfil his final wish with a huge reunion.

Of course, this is the Portokalos family so nothing runs smoothly, with a very bumpy plane journey setting the tone for the rest of their trip.

‘A lot has happened since my big fat Greek wedding…,’ Toula says in a voiceover. ‘My father passed away and his last wish was for us to visit his childhood village and reconnect with our roots, so we’re having a reunion.

‘And by we, I mean the whole family.’

Shortly after landing, they are greeted by locals and get to grips with Greece – including their interesting sleeping arrangements.

As she attempts to get comfortable with her new place as the head of the family, following her dad’s death, Toula learns that it’s a lot harder to wrangle her loved ones than she thought.

Her daughter, Paris (Elena Kampouris) also finds herself grilled about her own love life, proving that nothing in the family has changed.

‘This is one reunion we’ll never forget,’ Toula warns, as a message on the screen adds: ‘It’s more than a journey. It’s more than a promise. It’s the event that brings everyone together.’

This marks the first film in the franchise following Michael Constantine’s death in September, 2021, at the age of 94.

Nia is also serving as writer and director, and has been joined in the cast by John Corbett, Elena Kampouris, Gia Carides, Joey Fatone and Louis Mandylor.

The official synopsis reads: ‘From writer and director Nia Vardalos, the worldwide phenomenon My Big Fat Greek Wedding is coming back to cinemas with a brand-new adventure.

‘Join the Portokalos family as they travel to a family reunion in Greece for a heartwarming and hilarious trip full of love, twists and turns. Opa!’

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 is released in US cinemas on September 8.
