The London Tube line ‘haunted by the Girl on the Train’ ghost | UK News

We don’t want to put you off taking the Tube, but according to legend London’s historic network and its stations are home to a whole variety of ghosts.

Among them is the mysterious ‘Girl on the Train’, as she’s now known.

Several people, both underground employees and passengers, have reported seeing her on Bakerloo Line trains at Elephant and Castle.

The young woman boards the train, walks through the carriages, then disappears without a trace, they say.

Unexplained foot steps, possibly running, plus rapping noises have also been heard at the station while it’s been closed.

The BBC has previously shared one employee’s account of seeing the apparition.

He recalled: ‘Twas around six of the evening at a Bakerloo line Underground Station – about a week ago.

‘I was in pursuit of my duties as an employee of London Underground

‘So I join the train at the terminus at Elephant and Castle and walk forward to the front of the train with a view to travelling with the driver.

‘At this point the driver has not arrived so I put my bag down and move to the rear door to wait for him.

‘While I am waiting a girl gets into the carriage – she walks straight through the carriage and I have to move aside making some muttered apology – I sort of have to do this since I was in uniform!

‘A minute or so later the driver turns up, and we move toward the front of the train.

‘I notice that the girl is not in the carriage and this is a rather immediate cause for concern – she could not have left the train without passing me – I had full view of the carriage and platform at the time.

‘My reaction was to inform the driver – the only place she could have gone was to have walked down the tunnel – not really what we want!

‘The driver’s response was unusual: “Oh, her. We hear about her all the time – she’s even been in the papers.”

‘Lovely – my first real ghost is a media celebrity, – and, it must be said, very, very boring indeed.’

The BBC shared the story among other ghost tales in 2011, but it’s not clear when the apparent encounter happened. The Bakerloo Line opened in 1906.

Other London Underground ghosts include a woman who is said to wander the corridors of King’s Cross with her arms outstretched and screaming.

When passersby approach to check she’s OK, she disappears, according to those who say they’ve seen her.

The woman is said to be wearing 1980s clothing, leading people to think she could be among the 37 victims of the King’s Cross fire in 1987.

There’s also the faceless woman at Becontree station in Dagenham.

In 1992, a station supervisor said he was in his office, just off the platform, when he heard his door rattle.

This usually meant a train was about to arrive, but none did. Shortly after, the door rattled a second time, but again no train turned up.

The supervisor said he went out to investigate and as he was walking along the platform he got a feeling someone was behind him.

He turned around and saw a woman with long blonde hair but no face – it was just blank where her features were supposed to be, he said.

Some have linked her to a train crash in 1958 that happened just beyond the station and left 10 people dead.
