The Game Awards 2023 preview – what to expect from gaming’s biggest night of the year

Tonight’s the night (Picture: The Game Awards)

GameCentral tries to predict what new games will be unveiled at tonight’s award show, including Dishonored 3 and the Elden Ring DLC.

Given that E3 is no longer a thing, The Game Awards has become easily the most important day in the year for gaming, not only for the actual awards but the fact that so many games are revealed for the first time, up to and including new consoles.

You’ll see The Game Awards advertised as December 7 but thanks to the time difference it actually starts at 1am on December 8, from a UK perspective – with a pre-show that begins at 12.30am. Since it generally lasts for around three hours it’s incredibly inconvenient to watch in Europe, but don’t worry, as we’ll be reporting on all the announcements as they’re made.

But what kind of reveals can you expect? It’s been an unusual year, with lots of great games but relatively few new announcements, so it’s hard to tell if it’ll end as it began or if publishers have been saving everything up for a pre-Christmas blowout.

Only a very few companies have confirmed they’ll be at The Game Awards and none of those have said what they’re showing. There have been some believable leaks, but preview events are notorious for changing plans at the last minute, so you can’t guarantee anything.

If you do want to watch the event itself, you can do so via the YouTube video at the bottom of this page or from Twitch.

    PlayStation 5

Sony has announced virtually nothing so far this year, especially in terms of single-player games, and there’s little to suggest that things will be very different at The Game Awards. Since we know, through job ads, that Ghost Of Tsushima 2 is in development there is a small chance that it will be shown.

Or perhaps Sony will want to prove that The Last Of Us multiplayer game hasn’t been cancelled and that its live service plans are still on course, despite the meltdown at Bungie. More likely though, all they will show is PlayStation 5 exclusive Death Stranding 2.

    Death Stranding 2

There’s always a better than average chance that Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima will be at a Geoff Keighley event, since the two are close friends. Kojima has already tweeted to say he’s in L.A., so at the very least he’s going to be in the audience. Most likely though, he’ll offer the first proper look at Death Stranding 2 and possibly one of his other secret projects. Survival horror Overdose still hasn’t been officially acknowledged and it’s still unclear if that’s the same game as his cloud gaming project with Microsoft.

    Nintendo Switch

Traditionally, Nintendo doesn’t have much involvement in The Game Awards but they have used it before to make small announcements. Don’t go expecting the Switch 2 but the previously announced Another Code Recollection remaster compilation is rumoured to be there. That already has a release date, of January 19, so it’s not much of a revelation, but according to reliable tipster Pyoro it will have a free demo.

There could be other reveals but it’s unlikely to be anything more significant than DLC or a new remaster.

    Xbox Series X/S

Of the three console manufacturers, Xbox has always been the most enthusiastic supporter of The Game Awards, even going so far as to announce the Xbox Series X there. They revealed a ton of new games at the summer showcase in June but it’s impossible to guess which ones will or won’t show up tonight.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 and Avowed are thought to be the furthest along, but it’s probably too early for Fable and the rumoured Gears 6 – but it’s hard to rule anything out. A major Game Pass announcement with a third party is also more than likely and if we had to guess we’d say it’s almost certain that Baldur’s Gate 3 for the Xbox Series X/S will be shown and released that night – after all, it was promised for this year and there’s not much of 2023 left now.

    Dishonored 3

In the last few days, several sources have pointed towards a new game announcement form Deathloop and Redfall developer Arkane Studios at The Game Awards. Dishonored 3 was mentioned in leaked documents from the Microsoft vs. FTC legal battle and the current consensus is that it will be announced tonight, even though the action adventure series, set in a dystopian steampunk world, was thought to have ended.

Another version of the Arkane rumour suggests that they’re making a Blade The Vampire-Slayer game and that Mahershala Ali, who is set to play the character in the MCU, is involved and will be at The Game Awards. He’s certainly been talking about the film again recently, but the rumours are so fragmented it could easily be that some wires have been crossed. Especially as you might have thought Redfall would put Arkane off vampires for life.

Bethesda also have their Indiana Jones game to reveal, and something called Doom Year Zero was leaked at the same time as Dishonored 3 – so that could also appear. Companies rarely announce one or more new titles each though, so not all of these will be present tonight, even if they all exist.

Elden Ring: Shadow Of The Erdtree – is it time for a reveal? (Picture: Bandai Namco)

Elden Ring: Shadow Of The Erdtree

This is a difficult one to call, because while it’s been a long time since the initial announcement, and the parent game’ files have recently been updated on Steam (for a second time, in fact, just yesterday) producer Yasuhiro Kitao recently stated that the DLC ‘still has a little way to go.’ Whether he’s being coy is unclear but every time the files have been updated on Steam before it’s lead to a subsequent update, so something seems to be going and there’s reason to hope we’ll find out what it is tonight.

This showed up on my door today?

    Sega

Although they’ve not used The Game Awards much in the past, we know for a fact that Sega has something it wants to show off, as it’s been sending US influencers a card warning them of a, ‘New Era, New Energy.’ This doesn’t seem to match up with any previous tagline but because the font is somewhat similar to that sometimes used for fighting game Virtua Fighter, some think it might be related to that. It’s been a long time since Virtua Fighter was any kind of draw though, so that seems somewhat unlikely.

    Final Fantasy 16 DLC

Square Enix is also a firm supporters of The Game Awards and it’s rumoured that the DLC expansion for Final Fantasy 16 will be making its debut tonight. It supposedly focuses on the early years of main character Clive and is expected to introduce the Leviathan dominant.

Since it closed out the Summer Game Fest, which is also run by The Game Awards host Geoff Keighley, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is also likely to make an appearance, especially as it’s out early next year.

    Monster Hunter

It’s now five years since Monster Hunter: World finally made the series a hit in the West and given Capcom’s love for sequels you’d imagine a new one was due any minute. That’s exactly what a recent Capcom financial statement seemed to imply, with talk of an unannounced title out next year that will sell millions. However, there’s since been uncertainty as to how accurately the word unannounced has been translated and that it could simply be a reference to Dragon’s Dogma 2.

It certainly feels like it’s time for a major Monster Hunter announcement, but it’s gone from being a dead cert to merely a likely possibility. Capcom will almost certainly be there though, if only to show off Resident Evil 4 VR, which releases this month.

    Fortnite

After a recent surge in popularity, it’s clear that Epic Games is getting ready for some very big announcements, including a new Lego mode to rival Minecraft, a music game by the makers of Guitar Hero, and a racing game by Rocket League developer Psyonix. They’ve already teased all three new modes, but it seems very likely they’ll also be shown off at The Game Awards.

Brothers: A Tale Of Two Sons remake

This rumour only emerged in the last couple of days but leaker billbil-kun is basically never wrong, so the only question is whether it’ll be at The Game Awards or not. Brothers was first game by Josef Fares, it’s very much in the style of his subsequent co-op titles A Way Out and It Takes Two. Fares famously caused a commotion at the 2017 Game Awards, with a rant about microtransactions and the Oscars, amongst other things. He’s unlikely to be involved in the remake, as he left developer Starbreeze to found his own company shortly after the release of Brothers, but it is about time for him to announce a new game.

    Indie games

A significant percentage of the games show tonight are likely to be indie titles, although, as with all the other games, it’s not clear exactly which ones. Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodhunt developer Sharkmob have said they’ll reveal a new game and The Outlast Trials developer Red Barrels will also be there, but that’s all we know for certain.

For a while it was speculated that The Game Awards would be the venue to premier the GTA 6 trailer but obviously that never happened. It’s not impossible that Rockstar might make an appearance though and show a small bit of extra footage… but probably not.
