Daily Express – So what’s it to be … Tax rises or cuts to our services?

    July 9, 2024

The Daily Express writes about what it calls the “spectre of punishing tax rises” this autumn after the chancellor warned she had inherited the worst public finances since the Second World War. The front page features pictures of injured children after a heavy Russian bombing – which included hitting a children’s hospital. Elsewhere, JK Rowling hits out at the government’s new women’s minister.

Rachel Reeves just triggered fresh alarm bells over punishing £15bn Labour tax bombshell

Rachel Reeves raised the spectre of punishing tax rises this autumn as she warned that Britain is facing the worst public finances since the Second World War. The new Chancellor said she has already ordered Treasury bean-counters to compile a dossier on the current state of play over the coming three weeks.

The swift move has triggered alarm bells that Labour is laying the groundwork for up to £15 billion of tax rises in its first Budget.

Both Rishi Sunak and Jeremy Hunt warned during the general election campaign that “as sure as night follows day” Labour will put up taxes. Such is its importance, one of the Daily Express’ 10 pledges in our manifesto – aimed at holding the new government to account – is for lower taxes.

JK Rowling criticises appointment of women’s minister who cannot explain what a woman is

JK Rowling hit out after Sir Keir Starmer appointed a new women’s minister who was unable to explain what a woman is. The author warned that giving Anneliese Dodds the job adds to the “confusion” in the clash between women’s rights and the demands of trans extremists.

Ms Dodds was left floundering in an interview when she was asked to give Labour’s definition of a woman. Rowling posted a transcript of the exchange, adding: “And if you happen to be wondering how I have the transcript of that Woman’s Hour to hand, it was sent to me by Dodds’ office after I publicly criticised her prevarication on the programme.

‘Britain and Nato must spend more on defence’ - Paper Talk

    Editorial 09 July 2024.

Tuesday’s front pages continue its coverage of UK politics as the new Labour government begin setting out their plans for the country. Much of the coverage is around defence spending following a Russian attack on a Ukrainian hospital.

The right-leaning newspapers claim the new chancellor – Rachel Reeves – is laying the groundwork for tax hikes following her first speech as Chancellor in which she said Labour had inherited the worst economy since WW2. The publications argue the economy the Tories inherited from the last Labour government – in 2010 – was far worse than today’s situation.

Elsewhere, England’s upcoming Euros semi-finals make several tabloid front pages – and not surprisingly, dominates the back pages.
