Germany’s coalition in crisis after Scholz fires finance minister EU

Germany’s governing coalition is on the brink of collapse after Chancellor Olaf Scholz fired Finance Minister Christian Lindner, triggering a political crisis. Scholz, leader of the Social Democrats (SPD), announced that he had lost trust in Lindner, who heads the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and is part of the coalition.

Australia’s government is set to introduce new legislation banning under-16s from social media. The PM announced that the proposed law, which will be tabled in parliament next week, is designed to reduce the “harm” caused by social media.

Some of the front pages reported on the predictions of the election whilst others left US politics off their front pages altogether. Online, most major European newspapers/news sites lead with the presidential election – here are some of the highlights. 

Some of the US front pages reflect more updated reports regarding the US election, whilst others, due to time zones, are already old news! 

Only a handful of papers declare Donald Trump on the cusp of winning the election whilst others went to print long before those indications became clear. 

The more updated front pages also highlight the news the GOP has won back the Senate and that Donald Trump appears to have won the popular vote.

Podcast host Joe Rogan has endorsed Donald Trump for president, citing Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s arguments as influential. “Musk makes what I think is the most compelling case for Trump you’ll hear, and I agree with him every step of the way.”

It’s election day in the United States and millions of Americans will head to the polls to cast their ballot for either Vice President Kamala Harris or former President Donald Trump. The polls will start to open at 05:00 ET (10:00 GMT) and results are expected to trickle in over the early hours of Wednesday morning. 

Human rights activists are calling for the release of a woman detained in Tehran after she removed her clothes in an apparent protest. A video shared on social media showed the woman sitting in her underwear on the steps of the university before walking away. In another clip, she is seen removing more clothing before being forced into a car by plainclothes agents.

At least 10 people were killed when Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted on Flores Island in Indonesia early Monday, officials reported. The eruption began just before midnight, sending lava and rocks toward nearby villages, and causing significant damage to homes.

Just one day to go until the US Presidential election and the US front pages are firmly focused on the last day of campaigning. Both Harris and Trump will spend their final day of campaigning in the battleground states trying to win over voters, and with the latest polling suggesting the race is still too tight to call, it looks set that the election will go to the wire.
