With Liverpool set to spend big on new midfielders this summer, former Reds star Glen Johnson believes they should be prioritising a move for Chelsea’s Mason Mount over Brighton’s Alexis Mac Allister.
A midfield revamp is expected at Anfield during the next transfer window, with a host of big names linked to the club.
Mount and Mac Allister are among those thought to be on Liverpool’s shopping list, along with the likes of Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham, although it now looks like the latter is set for Real Madrid.
In a straight choice between the Chelsea and Brighton men, Johnson believes that the World Cup winner would struggle to get in the side, while the Englishman would be better equipped for Jurgen Klopp’s team.
‘Even though it sounds silly to say, nowadays, £70 million for a good player isn’t that expensive, is it?’ Johnson told Betfred.
‘Alexis is certainly a good player but if you have to spend £70 million, then I’d rather that money was spent on Mason Mount.
‘Mason would have suited the team better, he would have got into the starting eleven and I don’t believe that Alexis can instantly command a starting berth in Liverpool’s team.
‘He would certainly be a good squad player, but I’d have preferred if they signed Mason Mount.’
Mount’s contract with Chelsea runs until 2024 so if a new deal is not signed then the club may look to cash in on the England international in the summer.
However, much will depend on the identity of the new permanent manager at Stamford Bridge and if they are keen to keep hold of the 24-year-old.
Mauricio Pochettino is the favourite for the role and is reportedly a big fan of Mount, so a stay in west London would become much likelier if the Argentine landed the job.
