The Independent is a British online newspaper. It was established in 1986 as a national morning printed paper. Nicknamed the Indy, it began as a broadsheet and changed to tabloid format in 2003. The last printed edition was in 2016.

It tends to take a pro-market stance on economic issues and is politically aligned with liberalism.

Liz Truss’s mini-budget has been heavily criticised by Michael Gove as having the “wrong values”, reads the front page of The Independent.
The paper says Gove critised the measures as being not Conservative and came at a time when pressure was mounting on PM Truss to perform a u-turn on the controversial plan to axe the 45p income tax band – which gifts an average £10,000 to the 600,000 highest earners in the UK at a time when ministers are eyeing real-term cuts to welfare benefits.

The front page uses a full-length image of the Queen’s coffin being carried into Westminster Abbey for her state funeral. King Charles III and Camilla are seen walking behind the coffin. The front page says “a family and a nation lay the Queen to rest,” noting the final service – the burial – took place at 7:00 pm away from the cameras and was attended only by close family and friends.
