Switch 2 launch line-up will be GTA 6, Mario and Zelda: Director’s Cut – Reader’s Feature

What games will be on the Switch 2 (this is just a fan render)? (Picture: Salvo Lo Cascio and Riccardo Cambò Breccia)

A reader makes some bold predictions for the Switch 2’s initial wave of games, but are they a result of plausible logic or wishful thinking?

First of all, I’d like to point out that I’m fully aware that trying to predict Nintendo is madness, but I’m feeling a bit crazy right now and I’m also starting to get excited about the prospect of the Switch 2. I also genuinely feel there’s some educated guesses we can make now, about the games line-up, that could end up being mostly accurate. So strap yourself in while I am for at least a 33% success rate!

The first one is the most likely, as it’s both obvious and there’s already been a rumour about it… and that’s a new 3D Mario. The kicker here is not only the rumour but the fact that the Super Mario Odyssey team hasn’t announced anything new in six years, so unless they’ve been on a very long holiday they must be close to finishing up whatever they’re doing next.

The rumour at first was a Donkey Kong game, which I’d be totally fine with and which could easily be what the Mario rumour meant as well. Especially if you could maybe play as Donkey Kong and Mario. That already sounds like a neat gimmick to me, especially if they’re competing or maybe there’s co-op. It’d be a good way to do something different, give DK a bit of a reboot, and have a traditional Mario game as a launch game for the new console.

My second prediction is a Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom director’s cut. This one’s a bit of a long shot as it depends on the idea that the Switch 2’s equivalent of Wii U ports (as in an easy way to fill out the release schedules with worthwhile games people will actually want) is upgraded versions of Switch 1 games.

I don’t know whether Nintendo would just up the resolution and frame rate but knowing them they’d probably add more (plus the DLC), not because they’re generous but because then they can then charge for the upgrade. A director’s cut with better graphics, all the DLC, and some brand new content seems a pretty good deal to me and something that could be replicated with virtually any Switch game.

For my third choice, Metroid Prime 4 is an obvious one but my spider-sense tells me it’s more likely to fulfil the Super Mario Odyssey role in the line-up, where Odyssey came out about six months or so after the console. So either around Christmas or Easter 2025 for Metroid Prime 4, depending on when the Switch 2 actually comes out (I’m not going to try and guess that as well, it’s impossible).

So, my third choice is… Grand Theft Auto 6. I’ve heard other people suggest it already and to me it makes total sense. I think there’s a good chance GTA 6 will still be cross-gen and even if it’s not I’m sure that once Nintendo realise that it’ll be out at roughly the same time as the Switch 2 they’ll do everything to convince Rockstar to release it on the new console.

What a coup that would be! Proof that the Switch 2 isn’t just for kids and proof that it can run high end current gen games, even if it ends up being scaled back a bit. If they can do it for Mortal Kombat 1 I don’t see why they couldn’t do it for GTA 6, especially with a bit of financial and technical help from Nintendo.

So that’s my predictions, we’ll see how they pan out, but I think there’s at least some logic to all my choices. Although I do instantly regret writing this, because now I’m looking forward to the Switch 2 even more!
