A 17-year-old has been charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon following the death of dancer O’Shae Sibley last weekend.
The LGBTQ+ community has been in mourning following the death of Sibley, a gay, Black man who was targeted at a Brooklyn gas station for voguing, a form of dance that originates from New York’s Black queer and trans ballroom community.
Sibley, 28, a professional dancer and choreographer, stopped at the gas station with pals where he got out to dance to Beyoncé’s tune Renaissance, which was playing in their car.
Surveillance footage then captured the horrifying moment Sibley was accosted by a group of men who told him to ‘stop dancing’ and started using slurs.
During the confrontation, one of the men stabbed Sibley.
He was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead shortly after.

Sharing a simple message in black and white, she wrote: ‘REST IN POWER O’SHEA SIBLEY’.
Sibley was one of 11 siblings.

His family has shared their devastation following his tragic death, with a GoFundMe established to raise money for his funeral.
The late performer’s aunt, Tondra Sibley, told the Times that her nephew had moved to New York from Philadelphia for career opportunities.
‘It was a senseless crime,’ she said.
‘O’Shae has always been a peacemaker. All he wanted to do was dance.’
