Susanna Reid hailed two of the victors from the 2022 National Television Awards, celebrating her colleagues Kate Garraway and Martin Lewis as ‘national treasures’.
Last night, Good Morning Britain presenter Kate took home an NTA for the second consecutive year for authored documentary following the release of her film Caring for Derek, which explored what it’s like looking after her husband Derek Draper as he continues to recover from the long-term effects of having Covid-19.
Money Saving Expert Martin accepted the prize for TV expert, taking advantage of his time on stage to deliver a swipe at the government over the impact of the cost of living crisis on the nation.
Susanna was brimming with pride over both of their wins, sharing her delight on Twitter as she wrote: ‘HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to two amazing people I am privileged to work with @kategarraway who won the #NTA for Caring for Derek and @MartinSLewis who won Best Expert – national treasures both.’
Kate responded by telling Susanna that ‘we love working with you’, before also offering her congratulations to Martin.
Martin then chimed in to share the love by adding: ‘And the same to you Kate. Very moving to see you up there with Darcey,’ referring to Kate bringing her daughter Darcey to the award ceremony.
Several Twitter users responded to Susanna’s tweet by sharing how ‘well deserved’ they thought Kate and Martin’s recognitions were, with one writing: ‘Worthy winners.’
‘Absolutely. Couldn’t be two more deserving people,’ another added.
During her emotional speech on stage, Kate hailed her husband’s ‘incredible fighting spirit’, after Derek spent a year in hospital being treated for coronavirus.
‘We managed to speak to Derek. He is back in hospital at the moment, fighting on, so incredibly,’ the Life Stories presenter said.
‘We’re hoping he’s coming home again soon, but Darcey represents all the family, Billy, all the Drapers, everybody.’

Kate also commemorated all the people who act as carers across the nation, stating: ‘The professional carers are extraordinary, the millions of people who are caring for the people they love, are extraordinary.’
When Martin accepted his award, he outlined how it had been ‘a pretty horrible year financially’.
‘I mean, the energy crisis has been disastrous and left many people with terrible issues and mental health problems,’ he said.
‘I’m afraid the next year with the mortgage problem and the knock-on to rent is going to be pretty bad. And you know what? We need somebody to get a grip on the economy and put things a little bit back.’

Later on Twitter, Martin admitted he was ‘gobsmacked’ by his victory, saying that while he doesn’t usually drink, he has ‘maybe one a year, but maybe it’ll be tonight’.
Nonetheless, he later revealed that he didn’t have an alcoholic tipple, but the ‘party was lovely’.
The National Television Awards are available to watch on ITV Hub.
