Sunday Papers – Party at the Palace & Tories on course for by-election defeat

The Sunday papers are heavily dominated by the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations last night – a star-studded party at the Palace. Away from royal news, there is also reports on political stories as well as the half-term travel chaos.

    ………………………….

The Mail On Sunday – Ma’am-alade your majesty?

The Mail On Sunday leads with the Queen’s appearance alongside Paddington Bear during jubilee celebrations.

The paper notes that for 70 years “people have wondered what the Queen keeps in her handbag”, which has finally been revealed to be the famously greedy bear’s favourite snack – a marmalade sandwich.

Sunday Mirror – Rock ‘n’ Royal

Rock n’ royal, the Sunday Mirror says, after Brian May kicks off the Platinum Party At The Palace.

The star-studded tribute concert for the Platinum Jubilee and a surprise appearance of a beloved British bear lead the front pages. The Daily Mirror keeps it simple, showcasing a picture of legendary rock star Brian May – of appropriately named Queen fame – kicking off the “rock ‘n’ royal” evening outside Buckingham Palace.

Daily Star Sunday – Gemma: I’ve been wooed by new man

The Daily Star Sunday has a ghost story on the front.

The paper‘s front page leads with a story that The Only Way is Essex’s Gemma Collins has been told she lives with a ghost. The paper says she “called in a medium after odd goings-on” at home, punning in its headline that the reality TV star has been “wooed by a new man”.

The Sunday Times – Party of a lifetime for the ‘world’s grandmother’

The party of a lifetime for “the world’s grandmother” – that’s the assessment of The Sunday Times following the third day of Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

However, away from the celebrations, the paper also carries an exclusive report that the Conservative Party faces a “crushing by-election defeat” in Wakefield as “voters spurn” Prime Minister Boris Johnson over Partygate “lies”. The paper reports that the polling carried out in the West Yorkshire constituency indicates the Tory vote has collapsed to 28%, down by 19% on the 2019 general election.

    Sunday People – Thriller Queen

The Sunday People leads with the Platinum Jubilee concert in front of Buckingham Palace.

The paper has swapped its traditional red top to purple and added a jauntily-angled crown to its nameplate in tribute to the monarch. Under the headline “Thriller Queen” – a reference to the band Queen’s iconic hit – the paper also carries a picture of Brian May helping “Britain rock” to the palace party.

Sunday Express – Thank you for being there for us, Mummy

The Sunday Express leads with Prince Charles’s tribute to his mother and a message of thanks to the Queen on behalf of the nation. The heir to the throne told the gathered crowds the Queen “continues to make history”, praising her for always “being there for us” in both good times and bad.

The Sunday Telegraph – Queen’s teatime treat for the nation

The Queen’s “teatime treat for the nation” is on the front page of the Sunday Telegraph, adding she “lit up the Platinum Jubilee celebrations as only she could”, says the front page.

The paper notes that the sketch to open the concert was so secretive that not even her family knew about it, adding that the filmmakers behind the piece praised the Queen for her “wit, warmth and generosity” in going along with the idea.

The Observer – We’re the true party of patriotism, says Labour

The Observer leads with the Platinum Jubilee, and the Labour Party putting itself forward as the party of patriotism.

The paper opts not to focus on the concert, instead reflecting on the “celebrations and poignant symbols” of the Jubilee long weekend’s “carnival of memory” as a whole. Noting the longevity of the Queen’s reign, the paper says the projection of images from her 70-years on the throne onto Stonehenge was a fitting tribute – as the ancient stones are the “only tourist attraction of comparable steadfastness” in Britain.

But the Sunday papers are not solely focused on the Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

The Observer says Labour has “staked a bold claim to be the true party of patriotism.” Shadow culture secretary, Lucy Powell, has written an article for the paper saying that her party has “not always looked comfortable” with being patriotic – but that it is the party which now stands up for much-loved British institutions.

The online paper – The Independent, say Labour is also making a bid to seize the initiative away from Boris Johnson on the issue of levelling up.

An opinion poll leads the Sunday Times – the results suggest the Tories are on course for defeat in the Wakefield by-election. It says the party trails by 20% and that the survey found the PM’s behaviour was a direct cause of voters switching from the Tories to Labour.

The Sun on Sunday says the half-term holiday chaos at Britain’s airports has been a disgrace. It says civil servants are taking too long to carry out the vital security checks needed for new workers.

The Sunday Mirror says it should have been blindingly obvious to all sides that a crisis was coming, and that bosses and ministers are both guilty. It says we need “a cure for the incompetence of those in charge of our travel”.
