Sunday Papers: Euro 2020 ‘Miracle’ & G7 ‘barney on the beach’

The Sunday papers report on the condition of footballer Christian Eriksen after he collapsed on the pitch during Saturday’s Euro 2020 game. The papers also report on the latest from the G7 summit – including the ’barney on the beach.’

Yesterday’s Euro 2020 match, which saw Denmark footballer Christian Eriksen collapse on the pitch dominates most of Sunday’s Papers. The Daily Star Sunday reports that the footballer was saved by team caption Simon Kjaer, who performed CPR before medics continued treatment for 15 minutes as millions watched live on TV.

“Miracle on the pitch” is how the Sunday Mirror describes yesterday’s incident. The paper reports, on Saturday the 29-year-old was awake in hospital, and his condition was stabilised.

The Sunday Telegraph leads with other news. The paper says ministers fear Britain will have a six-week window to open up in the summer or risk have Covid restrictions in place until spring.

Government advisers says there is a “ticking clock” to lift measures before it’s too late to do so in September because of the greater transmission of Covid in winter and seasonal pressures on the NHS.

PM Boris Johnson gave his clearest signal yet that he is planning to dealy the 21 June reopening date by a month.

The says MPs and scientists have warned that Britain risks never getting its core freedoms back if the 21 June unlocking date is delayed. The Express says Boris Johnson will decide on Monday whether to postpone lifting restrictions after revealing there is “worrying stuff” in the latest virus data.

The anti-corruption watchdog will this week recommend that ministers should be banned from lobbying for up to five years after leaving office and face possible fines if they break the rules, the Sunday Times reports. Lord Evans is to make the proposal on Monday in an emergency review being published in the wake of the Greensill lobbying scandal.

    Sunday Papers Roundup

    June 21 reopening?

The Sunday Telegraph reports ministers fear restrictions could be in place in England until next spring.

There is concern that the very short window to open up during the summer, and by September it could be too late – as Covid spreads more easily in the winter months.

“Will we ever be free?”, asks the Sunday Express. Not until Boris Johnson dares to be bold, says the Mail on Sunday.

G7 summit – ‘Barney on the beach’

In G7 summit news, the observer reports Boris Johnson was embroiled in a public spat with EU leaders over Northern Ireland as tensions boiled over in Cornwall.

The paper says the PM told the Europeans to “get it into their heads”  that the UK was “a single country” after a series of tense meetings at which he was told to implement the Brexit deal in full.

The Telegraph reports the PM was infuriated when France’s President Macron suggested Northern Ireland was not part of the UK. It’s described as a “barney on the beach,” by the Sunday Times.

    ‘Royal mistruths’

The Mail countries to dedicate its front page to royal gossip, reporting on claims the Queen will no longer remain silent when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle allow what the paper calls “mistruths” about the Royal Family to be put out to the public.

The paper says the Queen has told courtiers to correct any statements which misrepresent her private conversations or those of any other senior royal. The paper further claims the dispute over the naming of Harry and Meghan’s baby girl –  Lilibet – the Queen’s family nickname- has, according to an unmanned insider, “sent her over the edge.”

The Mail calls it the “Queen’s war on the Sussex LA spin machine.”

    Euro 2020

The main story for the Sunday  Mirror and the People is the Danish footballer Christian Eriksen’s collapse at the Euro 2020.

The papers hail the way medical staff were able to revive him on the pitch as a “miracle.” Their front pages feature pictures of the footballer being stretchered off the pitch with an oxygen mask.

The Daily Star Sunday features the same story but highlights the team-mates forming a wall around him as he received treatment. The paper says he was saved by Denmark’s captain who gave first aid before medics ran onto the pitch and took over.
