Sudan: Third evacuation flight of Britons lands in Cyprus
A third evacuation flight has rescued around 230-240 UK nationals from war-torn Sudan, landing in Cyprus, with flights set to continue throughout the day. The British troops are endeavouring to extract citizens from the east African country during a 72-hour ceasefire.
The trapped nationals were told to make their way to an airstrip near the Sudanese capital Khartoum once the ceasefire began at midnight local time on Monday. An RAF military plane has been collecting UK passport holders and flying them to Larnaca Airport in Cyprus to have their documentation checked. Efforts are being made to avoid “active engagement” with other forces.
The conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) began on 15 April, with hundreds of people killed and thousands injured. The evacuation flights are being prioritised for families with children or elderly relatives, or individuals with medical conditions. Only British passport holders and immediate family members with existing UK entry clearance are eligible for the flights.
