Slovakia’s prime minister claims coup plot
Slovakia’s populist Prime Minister, Robert Fico, has alleged that opposition forces are planning a “Maidan-style” coup, referencing the 2014 uprising in Ukraine that ousted its pro-Russian president.
Fico’s claims, based on what he described as a classified intelligence report, came ahead of a no-confidence motion against his government. The motion was abandoned after the parliamentary session was held in secret at Fico’s request, prompting the opposition to walk out in protest.
The opposition accused Fico of misusing the Slovak Intelligence Service (SIS) to shield his government from scrutiny. His coalition holds a fragile majority, and Fico warned of early elections if internal disagreements persist.
The developments coincided with a visit from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, a close ally of Fico. Both leaders have been critical of Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky and have called for peace talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Fico, who survived an assassination attempt in May, continues to face intense political pressure as tensions rise in Slovakia’s parliament.
