Just Stop Oil protesters have doused the front of New Scotland Yard in orange paint.

It comes hours after demonstrators hurled tomato soup on a Van Gogh painting in London’s National Gallery.

Eco-activists blocked the road in front of the Metropolitan Police headquarters shortly after 2.30pm.

Some also glued themselves to the tarmac.

The iconic grey New Scotland Yard revolving sign, and the ground surrounding it, was sprayed in orange paint.

One woman present said she was protesting against the number of activists in prison for ‘standing up to corrupt governments and co-operations’.

In a short clip from the demonstration, she can be seen being escorted away by police.

This afternoon, the Met confirmed officers had arrested 24 protesters on suspicion of conspiracy to commit criminal damage.

A spokesperson from the force said: ‘Several individuals ‘locked on’ or glued themselves onto the road surface.

‘Specialist officers have now removed them and they are being taken into custody at various central London police stations.’

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Just Stop Oil said: ‘The climate crisis is the greatest threat to law and order, the police should stop arresting non-violent people seeking to protect humanity and either join us or start arresting those planning our deaths.

‘The government and the fossil fuel companies are guilty of genocide, we know who they are.

‘These are the people who should be in prison.’

Just Stop Oil are calling for the government to halt all new oil and gas licences and consents.

Today’s actions follow thirteen days of continuous disruption by supporters of the group, in which they have experienced over 385 arrests.

On Thursday, there were 21 arrests of Just Stop Oil supporters, who blocked roads leading to St George’s Circus in Southwark.

Since the campaign began on April 1, Just Stop Oil supporters have been arrested over 1,700 times, with five currently in prison.
