Selena Gomez has threatened to delete her Instagram account after more controversy came her way on the photo-sharing platform.

The American actress and singer, 31, took to her Instagram stories on Thursday night to tell her followers that she was ‘done’ – the post has since been deleted.

Selena had received backlash from some of her fans who accused her of ‘staying silent’ on the current political and religious tension in the Gaza Strip.

‘I’m taking a break and deleting my Instagram,’ she wrote, before presumably changing her mind. ‘I’m done. I do not support any of what’s going on.’

Her latest post addressing criticism from her 430million followers came three days after she initially said she was planning to take a break from the website.

The Only Murders in the Building actress continued: ‘My heart breaks to see all the horror, hate, violence, and terror that’s going on in the world.’

As of Thursday night, the death toll in Gaza stood at just under 10,000 in total – 3k of those declared dead are children.

She added: ‘People being tortured and killed or any act of hate towards any one group is horrific. We need to protect all people, especially children.’

Calling for a ‘stop’ to the ongoing violence between Israel and Palestine, she then apologised in advance for her words (or a hashtag) ‘not being enough’.

Selena, a Unicef ambassador, has turned off the comments in her last two Instagram posts, but her followers still called for her to make a statement.

Under a post Selena made on World Mental Health day, one fan said: ‘What about the mental health of the 8,500+ Palestinians being bombed in Gaza?’

Another said: ‘You can turn off your comments … you turned off your phone to take a social media break … you turned off your empathy towards Palestinians.’

On Friday afternoon, Selena’s Instagram account has limited comments on all of her recent posts, with the lockdown going back further than January 2023.

It’s not the first time the Single Soon singer has taken a break from the site – in February she told her fans that was ‘too old’ for social media.

She said: ‘I’m going to be taking a second from social media, because this is a little silly. I’m 30 and am too old for this.’
