The Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar has called for Sir Keir Starmer to resign as prime minister and Labour leader, saying the “leadership in Downing Street has to change“.
Sarwar said that his decision “isn’t easy, and it’s not without pain”. But he insisted his priority is to “my country, Scotland”. “There have been too many mistakes, they promised they were going to be different – but too much has happened”.
He also praised Starmer – but said he cannot continue.
Earlier today former Prime Minister Gordon Brown came out in support of the Labour leader saying, ‘Mandelson scandal is serious for Starmer but PM is man of integrity’, and that he should stay at the helm.
