    Russia – Ukraine: Monday’s updates

Monday’s main updates on the ongoing invasion of Ukraine – as Russian forces call for an “immoral” ceasefire, after heavy shelling of residential areas in key cities.

President Zelensky calls for Russian oil boycott

Ukraine’s president Zelensky is calling for more sanctions against Russia, as he calls for a boycott of Russian oil.

In his daily briefing, the president said: “Russia has not abandoned its plans against Ukraine” – therefore, he adds, “we need a new sanctions package”.

Adding, he calls for “a boycott of Russian exports, in particular, the rejection of oil and oil products from Russia”.

    Russia skips ICJ hearing

Russia has not attended an International Court of Justice (ICJ) hearing where Ukraine is calling for a halt to the invasion.

Alexander Shulgin, the Russian ambassador in The Hague – indicated the Russian government was not going to participate in the proceedings.

Ukraine’s representative Anton Korynevych told the court: “The fact Russian seats are empty speaks volumes, they are not here, they are on the battlefield.” He accused Moscow of defiling the Genocide Convention by using claims of a non-existent genocide as a false pretext to try to justify the invasion.

“Putin lies, Ukrainian citizens die,” he said.

Ukraine is asking the ICJ to intervene and ask Russia to immediately suspend military operations, to prevent further civilian causalities and any acts of genocide or rhetoric expressing genocidal intent.

Russia and Ukraine are both members of the ICJ and have both signed up to the Genocide Convention.

    New ceasefire

Monday’s leading news from the ongoing invasion of Ukraine at the hands of the Russian military is a new proposed ceasefire to allow Ukrainian citizens to flee key cities – previous ceasefires fell apart quickly as the Russian military continued its shelling and bombardment of civilian areas.

The new ceasefire has been branded “immoral” by Ukraine, as people in Kyiv are being offered a safe route to Russia’s ally Belarus whilst those in Kharkiv will have a corridor leading to Russia itself.

Corridors from besieged Mariupol and Sumy will lead to Ukrainian cities and to Russian ones.

Two previous ceasefires fell apart in Mariupol over the weekend as rocket attacks continued on many residential areas in several key cities. In Mariupol, citizens are running low on food supplies amid Ukraine’s warning of an all-out assault from Russia on the Ukrainian capital.
