Ruben Amorim calls out Andre Onana for blunder in Man Utd defeat to Brighton

Ruben Amorim has called out Andre Onana for his howler against Brighton, urging the Manchester United goalkeeper to ‘maintain focus’.

The Red Devils suffered an embarrassing 3-1 home defeat to the Seagulls at Old Trafford on Sunday, a result leaves them 13th in the Premier League.

Amorim has been left furious at the result, describing his underperforming side as ‘the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United’.

Onana made a miserable goalkeeping error for Brighton’s third goal, inexplicably pushing a tame cross into the path of Georginio Rutter, an incident which United head coach Amorim was asked about post-match.

‘It’s like the team (Onana’s error) – ups and downs,’ Amorim said. ‘Really up sometimes, and then really low downs.

‘We have to maintain our focus during all the games to try and win games. That is the only way we can turn things around.’

Speaking more generally about United’s 3-1 loss, an angry Amorim added: ‘In 10 games in the Premier League, we won two.

‘Imagine what this is for a fan of Manchester United. Imagine what this is for me. So we are getting a new coach that is losing more than the last coach. I have full knowledge of that.

‘Like I said, I’m not going to change, no matter what. I know we can succeed, but we need to survive this moment. Because I’m not naïve and I know that we need to survive now.

‘We are being the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United. I know that you want headlines, but I’m saying that because we have to acknowledge that and to change that. Here you go, your headlines.’

Sunday’s result means United have suffered their sixth home Premier League defeat of the season – remarkably their most from their opening 12 home matches of a league campaign since 1893-94.

But speaking to Sky Sports, Amorim doubled down on his intention not to change his style of play, amid concerns over his 3-4-3 formation.

‘I’m not going to change the way I see the game,’ Amorim said. ‘I’m very clear on that. The players are going to suffer, I’m sorry, the fans are going to suffer. I have one way of doing things, I know it’s going to [bring] results. But we have to suffer in these moments.’
