The Guardian – Revealed: ‘staggering’ rise in anxiety amongst children
The Guardian’s lead says there is a “staggering” rise in anxiety among children. More than 500 children a day in England are being referred to NHS mental health services for anxiety, more than double the rate before the pandemic began, the paper reveals.
Sven-Goran Eriksson is pictured on the front page, along with David Beckham’s tribute to his former boss. Becks described Eriksson, who led England to three major tournaments, as “passionate, caring, calm and a true gentleman”.
Elsewhere, rock’s biggest will-they-won’t-they finally has an answer: Oasis have announced that they will reunite for a 14-date tour of the UK and Ireland in 2025.
NHS referrals for anxiety in children more than double pre-Covid levels
More than 500 children a day in England are being referred to NHS mental health services for anxiety, more than double the rate of before the pandemic began, the Guardian can reveal.
In 2023-24 there were 204,526 new referrals of patients aged 17 or under where the primary cause was anxiety, official figures show. In 2019-20, the year before Covid-19 struck, the total was 98,953. In 2016-17 it was 3,879.
The alarming increase means children are now being referred to NHS mental health services in England for anxiety at a rate of one every three minutes or almost 4,000 a week.
Doctors, NHS officials and health leaders said in interviews that the surge in anxiety referrals was “staggering” and “shocking” and laid bare an urgent need to tackle the crisis in children’s mental health.
‘A true gentleman’: David Beckham leads tributes to Sven-Göran Eriksson
David Beckham led the tributes to Sven-Göran Eriksson after the former England manager died at the age of 76, describing him as “passionate, caring, calm and a true gentleman”.
The Swede became England’s first overseas manager and led them to the quarter-finals in three successive tournaments during his spell in charge between 2001 and 2006. Eriksson, who also managed Manchester City, Lazio and Roma, revealed in January 2024 that he had been diagnosed with terminal cancer and that he likely had “at best” about a year to live. Eriksson died at home in Björkefors, near Sunne, on Monday morning surrounded by his family.
Beckham posted footage of a recent meeting with Eriksson on Instagram and wrote: “We laughed, we cried and we knew we were saying goodbye. Sven, thank you for always being the person you have always been – passionate, caring, calm and a true gentleman.

They will not, however, be headlining Glastonbury festival as was rumoured over the weekend, nor playing 10 dates at Wembley and the Etihad Stadium respectively.
Instead, the concerts will take place in July and August, at stadiums in Cardiff, London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Dublin. Tickets go on sale at 9am on 31 August, with prices to be revealed on the day.
A press release billed the dates as the “domestic leg” of the tour and said that “plans are under way” for it to go beyond Europe later in 2025.
