A total of 89 Brewers Fayre restaurants closed across the UK on Monday, September 7, with 106 Beefeater locations set to shut on Thursday, September 10. The closures are part of a strategy by Whitbread to transition to an integrated food and beverage model.

A total of 89 Brewers Fayre restaurants closed on Monday, September 7, followed by 106 Beefeater locations set to close on Thursday, September 10. Whitbread plans to convert its remaining branded restaurants to an integrated food and beverage offer, aimed at enhancing efficiency and profitability amidst a challenging retail environment.

Whitbread announced the closure of 261 restaurants and pubs, including 106 Beefeater and 89 Brewers Fayre locations, as part of a strategic shift to an ‘integrated food and beverage offer’ aimed at increasing profitability. Chief Executive Dominic Paul stated that the changes are intended to enhance their market position amid a challenging retail environment, and further developments will focus on converting the remaining branded restaurants.

What remains unclear — It is not specified how many of the closures will result in job losses among staff.

Almost 200 Beefeater and Brewers Fayre restaurants across the UK are set to close their doors this week.

A total of 89 Brewers Fayre restaurants will close today, Monday, September 7, while 106 Beefeater locations will shut on Thursday, September 10.

Owned by Whitbread, which also owns Premier Inn, the company first announced that both restaurant brands would close back in April.

Whitbread also announced dozens of closures of three more restaurant and pub brands, including popular steakhouse Bar + Block, Cookhouse + Pub, and family-friendly pub chain Table Table.

When combined, 261 Whitbread-owned restaurants and pubs are closing this month across the UK as the company moves to shut all standalone restaurant chains and pivot to an ‘integrated food and beverage offer’.

    Why are the restaurants shutting?

Announcing the closures, Dominic Paul, Whitbread’s chief executive, said at the time: ‘We plan to convert all our remaining branded restaurants to an integrated food and beverage offer that is preferred by our hotel guests and will unlock the addition of more highly profitable extension rooms.

‘Our continued efforts to drive our commercial plan and efficiencies will extend our market-leading position and allow us to take share from our competitors, many of which are struggling to grow.’

The news comes as more shops and chains on the British high street are currently facing closures.

Most recently, it was revealed that 100 Morrisons Daily stores are to be axed, while the summer saw closures hit Quiz Clothing, popular accessories brand Radley, and corner shop chain Foreways.
