Viewers of Good Morning Britain had an uncomfortable wake up this morning as Richard Madeley decided to joke about his co-star Laura Tobin’s weight.
True to his reputation for saying inappropriate things – landing himself the title of third most complained about TV moment last year – the seasoned presenter instantly stumbled into this uncomfortable interaction.
Laura looked shocked when less than five minutes into the show, Richard introduced her and commented on her apparently ‘gaining weight’.
While discussing how the 42-year-old meteorologist had been off for a month thanks to Christmas plans, Richard said: ‘You’ve put on a lot of weight with the lack of exercise, haven’t you?’
A gobsmacked Laura cooly retorted: ‘Thanks Richard.’
Fellow anchor Susanna Reid laughed off the moment as the presenter attempted to play off the moment and awkwardly added: ‘Joke’.

‘Just the extra mince pies’ quipped Laura as she laughed it off while Susanna came to their aid and said: ‘Well you wouldn’t be the only one, Laura, because I ate for Britain.’
The tension didn’t end there though as later in the show the weather reporter said: ‘I’m just going to take a long waddle across the studio later, Richard.’
‘We’re not getting on this morning, are we?’ he replied, realising she was still upset with him.
While nothing more was said during the show, Laura did take to Instagram stories afterwards to ask followers if she should eat sweets or bananas for a snack.
She hasn’t said if she got any further apology from her co-star, who is not as active on social media.

Laura had been happily posting snaps from her Christmas, sharing a picture of herself dressed up with a glass of champagne.
In the caption she wrote: ‘🎄 🥂 Merry Christmas from my house to yours.
I hope you are spending the day with loved ones and eating more than your weight in chocolates. If your not, a toast to you and sending love 💗’
Richard on the other hand spent the festive season with his wife, Judy Finnigan, and daughter Chloe Madeley, who has recently split from husband James Haskell.
Over Christmas, Chloe, 36, posted that she had gone with her parents and her daughter to The Ritz – just like Posh and Becks.
The personal trainer had married the 38-year-old former rugby union star in 2018 and welcomed daughter Bodhi in August 2022.
Despite the split, the pair appear on good terms, with the mum-of-one calling James the ‘best dad’ as the trio enjoyed a recent family day out.
