The family of Private Liam Ramage, a soldier severely injured in a fire at CFB Wainwright, has spoken out about the incident that occurred during a training exercise on 17 October. The fire, which originated on the automatic grenade launcher range, resulted in four fatalities and left 39 others injured. Brigadier-General Vanessa Hanrahan confirmed that firefighting efforts were hampered due to safety restrictions, stating, “the fire remained within the permanent danger area.”

Cheryl Ramage, Liam’s mother, recounted her distress upon learning of the fire while attending a dinner theatre. After confirming her other son was safe, she struggled to reach Liam, whose initial silence led to mounting fear. The family received the tragic news when military officers arrived at their home. Cheryl described the moment as “the hardest moment of my life.” His wife, Marisa Ramage, feared the worst, initially believing Liam had died.

At the Royal Alexandra Hospital, the family faced the reality of Liam’s injuries, which included burns covering 40 per cent of his body. Cheryl explained, “mostly to his face, head, neck,” and more, as they were unprepared for the extent of his condition. Marisa noted the emotional toll this has taken, revealing, “he can’t see when he wakes up, he can’t speak and he can’t move very much,” leaving him unable to communicate effectively.

Liam has undergone multiple surgeries since the incident, but his recovery remains uncertain. Cheryl reported that despite his injuries, Pte. Ramage attempted to assist fellow soldiers when first responders arrived. “His military friends have been also phenomenal,” Marisa said, acknowledging the support from the military community during this difficult time.

The family has established a GoFundMe to assist with Liam’s long recovery process, which is expected to involve extensive rehabilitation. Cheryl expressed gratitude for the support received, including from blood donors, stating, “He’s got an amazing support system.” They aim to be by his side daily in the hospital, building emotional support through visits and shared memories.
