Richard Keys claims Liverpool’s winner against Fulham was only allowed ‘because it was at the Kop End’

Pundit Richard Keys has bizarrely claimed that Liverpool’s late winner over Fulham was only allowed to stand ‘because it was at the Kop End’.

Liverpool came from behind to beat Fulham 4-3 at Anfield on Sunday, a result that moves the club ahead of Manchester City in the title race.

The Reds were trailing 3-2 in the 86th minute before two quick-fire stunners from Wataru Endo and Trent Alexander-Arnold secured the three points.

However, there was a little bit of controversy regarding the winning strike as Kostas Tsimikas appeared to unfairly challenge Bobby De Cordova-Reid as he went to clear the ball out of the box.

His clearance only went as far as Alexander-Arnold as a result, who subsequently powered in the winner.

Discussing the match on beIN Sports, Keys and his fellow pundits, which included former Liverpool star Jason McAteer, agreed that the goal ought to have been disallowed for a foul in the build-up.

‘I’ve got to admit, I thought there was [a foul],’ McAteer said.

‘Tsimikas, the way he challenged, he didn’t win the ball – he barged into the player. It’s a brave call to disallow that but for me that’s a foul.’

Manchester United icon Dwight Yorke said: ‘It’s a clear foul, we all agree. Look at the defender and look where the ball went. He’s cleared the ball then got thumped afterwards.’

Everton hero Andy Gray added: ‘It’s only not a foul if Tsimikas wins the header.’

But Keys had a less tangible reason for why the goal was not overturned, assessing: ‘It’s only not a foul because it’s at the Kop End.’

Interestingly, Fulham boss Marco Silva took a different view, seemingly having no qualms with how his side lost the game, saying post-match: ‘We know the game is never 100 per cent under control against these types of sides and these types of crowds, but the game was more or less under control.

‘[Then] one long ball, a good second ball from them, and another great finish from the edge of the box.

‘In that moment I knew it was the end of the match. I wanted to make a change quickly to calm the game down again, and in that moment [after] a mistake from us they scored the fourth goal.

‘The players clearly didn’t deserve what they took from the game. Many, many positives from them, the boys have to be proud of what they did.

‘Unfortunately for us we didn’t take what we deserved, but in this way we are going to get the points in the next few games.’
