Breaking: President of Haiti assassinated at home
A group of unidentified individuals broke into the private residence of President Jovenal Moism 53, overnight and shot him dead said Claude Joseph, the interim Haiti PM, in a statement.
Impoverished Haiti has grown increasingly unstable and disgruntled under President Moise’s rule, bringing an eruption of violent protests, kidnapping and organised crime.
Haiti’s first lady Martine Moise is said to be in hospital.
Claude Joseph called the killing a “hateful, inhumane and barbaric act,” before adding: “Democracy and the republic will win.”
He said Haiti’s police and other authorities had the situation under control with officers deployed to the National Palace and the upscale community of Petionville.
Mr Joseph said some of the attackers spoke Spanish but added no more details.
