Pope Francis leaves Rome hospital 10 days after surgery
Pope Francis has left hospital after spending 10 days at Rome’s Gemelli hospital following an operation to remove half his colon.
The 84-year-old was seen being driven out of the hospital on Wednesday morning.
He had surgery to tackle a severe narrowing of his large intestine on 4 July. It is the first major procedure he has undergone since accepting the papacy in 2013.
On Sunday, his first public appearance since the surgery, he was standing for about 10 minutes while speaking from the balcony of his hospital room.
And on Tuesday he visited a children’s cancer ward, smiling and walking without assistance.
He has no further commitments for the rest of July.
In September Pope Francis plans to visit Slovakia and Budapest. If his health allows him, he is expected to address the COP26 climate change conference in Glasgow in November and has further trips to Malta and Cyrus later the same month.
