    Sunday Papers: PM’s plans to open schools in September – ‘No excuses,’ Second-lockdown this September & France demands £30m from UK

    In today’s briefing update, the Sunday Papers lead with the PM’s plans to open schools in September, warning children will suffer more harm by staying at home. Other front pages lead with a warning of a second lockdown in September and France asking the UK for £30m to police the Channel.

    PM’s school plans: Children suffer more harm by staying at home

    The Sunday Times says Boris Johnson is set to warn parents that keeping children home is a far greater threat to their wellbeing than Covid-19. The paper says the PM has ordered a PR campaign to ensure schools reopen on time in September after being presented evidence that personal and social harm to children is more persuasive to parents than dears about pupils falling behind academically.

    PM’s plans – Boris warns: ‘No excuses’

    The Sunday Express says the prime minister has warned there must be “no excuses” for children not being back in the classrooms next month. The paper reports that Mr Johnson – who is said to be personally reopening the schools p made the demand in a series of meetings with ministers and government officials last week.

    PM: It’s our moral duty to reopen schools

    The Mail on Sunday says the PM is “throwing down the gauntlet” to teaching unions it says are blocking the return of pupils by insisting the country has a “moral duty” to open schools. In an article for the paper, Mr Johnson declares that a resumption of normal teaching is now his “national priority.”

    We’re heading for lockdown next month, says top expert

    The Sunday Mirror says a former government chief scientific adviser has predicted the UK could be heading for a full lockdown by the end of the month. Sir David King told the paper the UK needed an effective test and trace system by September, otherwise, schools opening fully again would “put us right back.”

    French ask for $30m to police Channel 

    The Sunday Telegraph says France is demanding the UK pay £30m to stem the flow of migrants being smuggled into Britain by criminal gangs. The UK is drawing up a plan to deploy naval vessels, drones and even spy planes to stop migrants making landfall on the south coast of England. However, any deal requires France’s agreement, and it has emerged Paris is requesting the money to fund patrols on the beaches of northern France.

    Two-thirds of workers continued job in lockdown

    The Guardian says the majority of people furloughed have carried on working during the lockdown, with men significantly more likely than women to flout the rules of the scheme and work for their employer when they are not allowed to do so. 

    Working mothers have also felt more compelled to volunteer to be furloughed than working fathers, research reveals.

    Brazil’s coronavirus death toll surpasses 100,000

    France24 says Brazil on Saturday surpassed 100,000 coronavirus deaths and three million cases of infection, crossing the grim milestone after the President said he had a “clear conscience” on his response to the outbreak. 

    With 100,477 fatalities and 3,012,412 confirmed cases, the South American nation of 212 million people is the second hardest-hit country in the global pandemic, after the US.

    Aramco profits fall in tough quarter but sees partial recovery from Covid-19 impact

    Arab News says Saudi Aramco, the world’s biggest oil company, reported a net income of $6.57bn for the second quarter of 2020, the period which witnessed the most volatile oil market conditions for many decades. 

    The result, announced to the Tadawul stock exchange is Riyadh where the shares are listed, compared with income of $24.7bn last year.

    Deadly fire at coronavirus facility in south India

    Aljazeera says at least 11 coronavirus patients were killed by a fire at a southern Indian hotel being used as a Covid-19 facility, officials say – the second such incident this month. 

    The blaze at Hotel Swarna Palace in the city of Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh state broke out at 5am local time at least 22 people have been taken to hospital.

    Tokyo reports 331 new coronavirus cases as Okinawa marks record high 159

    Japan Times says the Tokyo Metropolitan Government confirmed 331 new Covoid-19 cases on Sunday, holding above the 300 mark for the fourth straight day. 

    The figure brought the city’s total infections to 15,867. The metropolitan government has raised its alert for the pandemic to the highest four levels, meaning “infections are spreading.”

    Mexico surpasses 475,000 coronavirus cases as death toll rises

    CNN says Mexico’s Health Ministry reported 6,495 new Covid-19 cases Saturday, bringing the country’s total number of cases to 475,902.

    The Health Ministry also announced 695 new deaths. The country’s death toll is now at least 52,006.

    Sky News says Simon Cowell has broken his back while testing his new electric bicycle at his home in California.

    The music mogul, 60, was trying out the bike in the courtyard of his Malibu home when he fell off. He was due to have surgery on Saturday evening.

    BBC Sport says former world number one Dustin Johnson charged into the lead on a thrilling third day at the 2020 US PGA Championship in San Francisco.
