Piastri gets first pole since Zandvoort, Norris second after error

Oscar Piastri Snags First Pole in Qatar Grand Prix Qualifying

Oscar Piastri celebrated a career milestone by securing his first Formula 1 pole position since August, achieving the fastest time in the Qatar Grand Prix qualifying session. The Mclaren driver capitalised on a costly error from his teammate Lando Norris, who was unable to improve on his final lap.

    McLaren Show Dominance

The McLaren duo set the benchmark early in Q3, with Norris clocking in at 1m19.495s, closely followed by Piastri at 1m19.530s. Their impressive pace meant they were about three-tenths clear of George Russell, signalling their potential for a strong performance in the race.

However, a red flag caused a brief halt in qualifying, necessitating the removal of a sticker at Turn 2, dislodged by Carlos Sainz’s car. Once the session resumed, Norris aimed to extend his lead but faltered at Turn 2, lacking the fuel to aid a second attempt. This opened the door for Piastri, who seized the moment, ultimately topping the session with a time of 1m19.387s.

    Verstappen Makes Late Push

Max Verstappen orchestrated a late surge to claim third place, edging ahead of Russell as the clock wound down. Mercedes‘ George Russell settled for fourth position, while Andrea Kimi Antonelli turned in a solid performance, clinching fifth.

Isack Hadjar finished sixth, while Carlos Sainz, despite the earlier disruption, secured seventh but faces an investigation for a potentially unsafe release during the session. Fernando Alonso joins Sainz on the fourth row.

    Notable Finishes and Struggles

Pierre Gasly outperformed Charles Leclerc, who survived a high-speed spin but still managed to qualify for Q3. Nico Hulkenberg was just shy of breaking into the top 10, denied by a late improvement from Leclerc, while Liam Lawson managed to leapfrog Ollie Bearman.

Gabriel Bortoleto nudged ahead of Alex Albon, who had a frustrating session, recording identical lap times in both Q1 and Q2. Meanwhile, Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda narrowly missed advancing past Q1, losing his provisional place late in the session.

    The Back of the Grid

Esteban Ocon’s attempts to improve yielded a disappointing 17th, while Lewis Hamilton faced yet another challenging weekend, struggling to 18th place. Meanwhile, Lance Stroll and Franco Colapinto rounded out the grid, positioning themselves at the very back for Sunday’s race.

As teams regroup ahead of the race, Piastri will be looking to convert his pole position into a podium finish, while Norris seeks redemption after his costly mistake.
