People are sharing the weird and wonderful architecture of their local supermarket

Ah the joys of a local supermarket. For a building simply designed to house our daily produce, they sure have a tendency to look a bit extra.

From buildings that look like UFOs to an ASDA that looks like the Louvre, there’s no shortage of bizarre design choices for stores scattered across the UK. And over on Twitter, people have been sharing their favourites.

It all started when writer and musician Jimmy Mac tweeted: ‘Fascinated by this style of out-of-town supermarket architecture.’

And turns out, we are too. We’ve rounded up a few of the most outlandish designs and conversions out there. How does your local compare?

    ASDA, Dundee

This ASDA looks like the Louvre (Picture: Twitter/@DungHeap1903)

We have to admit, this ASDA does look like it belongs in Paris.

The Twitter user who share it wrote: ‘The Louvre in Paris shipped over and made into an ASDA in Dundee.’

They aren’t wrong, and this rather dramatic design for the budget supermarket isn’t the only one of its kind.

The ASDAs in Dunfermline, Leeds, St Helens, Doncaster and Irvine all give off Louvre vibes too.

    ASDA, Stanley, Durham

This ASDA looks like a UFO (Picture: Twitter/@theLewisbell)

This ASDA, however, doesn’t appear to be so glamorous.

In fact, it looks like one weird futuristic warehouse UFO, with one user commenting: ‘It looks like some sort of massive extra terrestrial spaceship.’

Another wrote: ‘Looks like a launchpad at Cape Canaveral.’

The building even has an indoor bowls centre in the roof! All in all, it’s a rather bizarre local supermarket.

    Tesco, Gillingham

‘Meet the Tower of Tesco, Gillingham,’ wrote one Twitter user.

We have to say this is possibly the most extra tower we have ever seen. We are also a bit unsure what purpose it serves.

One person wrote: ‘Looks like a vibrator.’

At least you’ll know exactly where you are.

    Morrisons, Nottingham

The very grand Morrisons in Nottingham (Picture: Nottingham Post / BPM Media)

This Morrisons in Nottingham seems rather extravagant if you ask us, with its countless pillars creating a sheltered entrance.

Plus, what is it with British supermarket buildings and needing clocktowers perched on the roof?

    Tesco, Swindon

The same goes for this Tesco. Just like its Morrisons counterpart, as soon as you pull into the car park you’re greeted with the pointiest most obnoxious tower, with a very proportionally small clock.

    Sainsbury’s, Oswestry

Following a similar but unnecessary format of pointy towers, this Sainsbury’s has a rather glamourous roof.

A mixture of glass and roof tiles means that sunshine will reach you at the entrance but you’ll still be sheltered from the rain when you put your trolley away.
