Paul Merson urges Mikel Arteta to drop Arsenal star for Tottenham clash | Football

    TL;DR – Two-minute read

Arsenal faced a challenging week, drawing 1-1 with Brentford before squandering a two-goal lead to finish 2-2 against Wolves. Manager Mikel Arteta’s side now leads Manchester City by just five points ahead of a crucial north London derby against Tottenham, who appointed Igor Tudor as caretaker following Thomas Frank’s dismissal amid relegation concerns.

Paul Merson has shared his cautious prediction for the highly anticipated north London derby between Arsenal and Tottenham, set to take place on Sunday afternoon. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta aims to reignite his team’s Premier League title charge following recent disappointing results.

Arsenal were once strong title contenders but have faced a worrying decline, leaving fans anxious about a potential fourth consecutive season without the crown. After a 1-1 stalemate with Brentford and a 2-2 draw against bottom-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers, Arsenal’s lead over second-placed Manchester City has been reduced to just five points, which could be cut to two if City triumph over Newcastle United on Saturday.

    Tottenham’s Struggles and New Management

Tottenham Hotspur have struggled in the Premier League this season, resulting in the sacking of their previous manager, Thomas Frank, before a recent defeat to Newcastle, placing them 16th in the table. Igor Tudor has been appointed as caretaker manager until the end of the season, and Spurs are eager to alleviate relegation fears while also aiming to disrupt Arsenal’s title ambitions.

Merson expressed concerns regarding Arsenal’s recent performance, particularly criticising their display against Wolves, which he described as “one of their worst ever games.” He noted the absence of Eberechi Eze from the starting lineup and suggested that Mikel Arteta’s decision to deploy Bukayo Saka in a central role undermined the team’s effectiveness.

    Merson’s Predictions for the Derby

Merson expressed uncertainty about the outcome of the derby, stating, “I’m sitting here and I don’t know what happens in this game.” He anticipated a slim victory for Arsenal but acknowledged that a failure to secure three points would not be surprising given their recent form.

As the title race unfolds, Merson indicated that it is now “in Manchester City’s hands,” emphasising the dramatic shift in momentum and Arsenal’s struggles. He acknowledged the scenario in which Arsenal could still alter their fortunes if they win against Tottenham and Newcastle secures a victory at the Etihad, although he expressed scepticism about that occurring.

Arsenal continues to pursue their first Premier League title since 2004, having come second for the past three seasons, while Manchester City, under manager Pep Guardiola, seeks to extend their dominance in the league.
