Patrice Evra paid Manchester United’s Scott McTominay a huge compliment after his brace against Chelsea on Wednesday night, comparing him to Blues legend Frank Lampard.
The 26-year-old scored both goals for the Red Devils in their 2-1 win over Mauricio Pochettino’s side at Old Trafford, either side of Cole Palmer equalising for the visitors.
His efforts on Wednesday took McTominay’s goal tally to five in the Premier League this season and six in all competitions, a vital contribution for Manchester United in a campaign that has seen them struggle to find the back of the net.
The Scotland international is now his team’s top scorer for the season so far and Evra says his display against Chelsea reminded him of rampant midfield goal-scorer Lampard.
‘McTominay is always there when it is an important game scoring goals,’ Evra told Amazon Prime after the big three points for the Red Devils.
‘He reminds me a bit of Frank Lampard. He is doing this for United and the Scottish national team so very well done.
‘He could have scored four. After the game he was a little bit disappointed. He had so many chances, he is always in the right place and always running into the box, this is why he reminds me of of Lampard tonight.’
McTominay is just one goal shy of his best goal-scoring season already and he intends to keep improving the offensive side of his game.
‘It’s something I want to keep building, in terms of my game,’ he said. ‘People tell me that I can do more of it and I can score goals and you just have to believe in yourself.
‘My mum and dad have always said just get in the box and try and score goals, and my grandad at home, and sometimes it’s just believing in yourself.
‘As long as the team are playing well and I am contributing then I am happy.’
