Jamie Lee Curtis said the question of making Oscars categories gender neutral is a ‘complicated’ one, after scooping the best supporting actress gong.
The star shared that she had felt ‘surreal and proud’ to have been listed among this year’s female nominee at the 2023 Academy Awards for her turn in the most nominated film, Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Speaking backstage after her win for portraying IRS auditor Deirdre Beaubeirdra, the actress said she did not want to ‘diminish’ opportunity for women, but also acknowledged her stance as the mother of a transgender daughter.
Addressing ‘the bigger’ question of inclusivity, she said: ‘How do you include everyone when there are binary choices which is very difficult.
‘As the mother of a trans daughter I get that and yet, to de-gender the category – I’m concerned will diminish the opportunity for more women, which is also something that I have been working hard to try and promote.
‘So it’s a complicated question, but I think the most important thing is inclusivity and more women.

‘Basically just more f**cking women anywhere, anytime all at once.’
The star, who is daughter of Hollywood legends Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh, has been married to her husband Christopher Guest since 1984.
The couple share adopted daughters Annie, born in 1986, and Ruby, born in 1996.
Jamie, 64, broke down in tears as she was awarded her first Oscar in front of her peers.
During an emotional speech, she gave her ‘bae’, Michelle Yeoh, a shout-out, before explaining: ‘I know it looks like I am standing up here on my own but I am not.
‘There are hundreds of people and hundreds of people. We just won an Oscar. To my family, my beautiful husband, Christopher Guest, my daughters, Annie and Ruby, my sister Kelly – we just won an Oscar.

‘To all of the people who have supported the genre movie’s that I have made for hundreds and hundreds of thousands, we just won an Oscar together.’
Looking up to the sky, she mentioned her parents, Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis, adding through tears: ‘And my mother and father were both nominated for Oscars in different categories.

Everything Everywhere All At Once has already taken home a string of trophies during awards season – including the best supporting actor Oscar for Ke Huy Quan earlier in the night.
