NYPD releases new photos in search for CEO’s killer
New York police have released images of an unmasked individual wanted for questioning in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Thompson, 50, was shot in the back and leg on Wednesday morning outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan in what authorities believe was a targeted attack.
The shooting occurred at approximately 6:45 a.m. EST near Times Square and Central Park. Thompson was set to speak at an investor conference later that day. Surveillance footage shows the suspect, dressed in a light brown jacket and a black face mask, waiting outside the hotel for five minutes before ambushing Thompson, who arrived on foot.
The attacker’s weapon initially jammed but was quickly fixed before additional shots were fired. The gun appeared to be fitted with a suppressor, according to CCTV analysis.
Police have yet to establish a motive for the killing.
DNA testing is underway on three bullet casings and live rounds found at the scene. The casings were inscribed with the words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose,” phrases linked to the “three D’s of insurance,” a term critical of tactics used by insurance companies to deny claims.
Police released photos of an unmasked man believed to have used a fake ID to check into a nearby hostel. This individual reportedly travelled to New York from Atlanta, Georgia, on a bus days before the shooting.
