‘Nothing has changed’ – Erik ten Hag is just as bad as former Man Utd manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, claims Jason Cundy

Jason Cundy has slammed Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United and says it looks like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is still in charge of the team.

Under former Ajax boss Ten Hag, United have made a mixed start to the 2022-23 season and find themselves fifth in the Premier League after eight games.

Manchester United have already lost at home to Brighton, been being 4-0 by Brentford and suffered a 6-3 defeat to rivals Manchester City.

However, their domestic form since the Brentford setback has been largely promising, although they struggled to beat Cypriot minnows Omonia twice in their last two Europa League games.

United survived a scare in the away match – coming from behind to win 3-2 – and needed an injury-time goal from Scott McTominay to break Omonia’s resistance at Old Trafford on Thursday night.

After Manchester United’s most recent win, Cundy took aim at Ten Hag and claimed he sees ‘no difference’ in the team since Solskjaer’s sacking in November 2021.

He told talkSPORT: ‘Do you know what? It looks like Ole is on the bench still. I look at this United team and in all honestly, I’ve seen no change…

‘Tell me now that there’s a difference with the United you saw this time last year under Ole and what you’re seeing now. They say he’s picking up results, right? Ole picked up results.

‘But you know it was shocking [Solskjaer’s tenure]. He was living on the edge of his seat. Because he wasn’t good enough Ole, he wasn’t good enough. Performances, really drab. Results, managed to find a way.

‘Tonight, performance, yeah, okay. Result okay. If you’re happy with that, you’ve got another Ole on the bench right now. I don’t see any difference.

‘The only difference is the guy on the bench has a beard. You know what I saw on the bench? Ole Gunnar Ten Hag.’

Cundy added: ‘As we all know in football, the result is obviously the most important thing, of course it is and that will never change, but there are always games and moments in a team’s season where you want to see a better performance and a better result.

‘United dominated the game but they could have dropped points and those dropped points could have been fatal.

‘They can still top the group, they go to Real Sociedad and still have to play there, but this a group that Manchester United should be running away with and they’re not.

‘The problems at United are still there. I thought the performance against Everton at the weekend was pretty poor, I thought that both sides were bang average. Ronaldo got the chance and finished it off, but that could have been a draw.

‘It’s about the result and how you perform and what does the next game look like and the game after that.’

Responding to a colleague’s suggestion that results are the only thing that matter at this stage of Ten Hag’s reign, Cundy continued: ‘Yeah, but in an isolated situation that conversation is fine, but when you broaden it and you talk about the bigger picture – that’s what football is about, the bigger picture.

‘If you want to talk about tonight’s game and leave the conversation there without talking about the weekend, that’s fine, but we don’t and never do.

‘United fans and every football fan always has the bigger picture in their mind, what does my club look like?

‘I’ve done it. Look, we’ve got Graham Potter in, are we doing okay? Yeah. Are we where we should be? No, we’re not.

‘There are still players there who, right now, aren’t performing to the level that I want or expect them to, and if you’re an honest football fan about your club and United fans are generally very honest, they should be saying “we got out of jail tonight”.

‘How can a team like United when playing at home against Omonia Nicosia – a team that genuinely, I’d never heard of them before!

‘How can this be happening that Scott McTominay nicks a winner in injury time? If United fans are honest they should say that they’re concerned about their club.’

Manchester United return to Premier League action on Sunday against Newcastle United.
