Nina Wadia finds it ‘unbelievable’ that EastEnders fans want Zainab back but will return ‘anytime’

Nina Wadia has been once again speaking about the prospect of returning to EastEnders, admitting she finds it ‘unbelievable’ fans want to see Zainab Masood again.

Zainab was last seen in Walford back in 2013 and still, Nina is asked when she will be heading back to the BBC One soap to put the Masood family back in the show.

Speaking at this year’s Ethnicity Awards, the actress told Metro.co.uk she is more than ready to reprise her role, but can’t help feeling shocked that people fell in love with Zainab as much as they did!

‘What fascinates me is that people still say “when are you going back in?”, I left over a decade ago! Honestly, it was one of my most favourite jobs to have done, I met some incredible actors and I’m still friends with a lot of them. I do miss it. I would never say never!’.

The return of iconic characters has been a bit of a running theme in EastEnders as of late.

With Janine (Charlie Brooks) and Alfie (Shane Richie) settled back into Albert Square, we also know Ricky (Sid Owen) is on his way…and maybe Zainab will be added to that list?

    ‘Anytime!’, Nina added.

‘I’m always there for anyone. Nitin [Ganatra, who played Masood] is lovely and of course we would [both go back]. We had a ball when we were on it. I went back into comedy after Zainab’s exit, things got quite heavy for her. I’ve been away long enough now that if I did go back, I’d bring back the humour and that’s what I’d love to do’.

The comedic side to Zainab has been something Nina previously spoke about during a chat with us, revealing: ‘I won the Best Comedy Performance in a Soap!’, for her portrayal.

‘I don’t think EastEnders had ever won that before’, she said.

‘They brought me in to make it funny and to liven it up a bit. Soap had never been on my agenda but with Zainab Masood, they gave me the chance to create someone from scratch and they wanted her to be funny.’
