Going beyond the ordinary news headlines
Good Morning! It’s a cloudy start this morning in the capital, but don’t despair – the heat is expected to return later this week.
It’s all pretty glum news leading the UK media this morning, with most of it focused on the international chaos from across the USA and the war in Gaza.
The LA protests have turned violent as Donald Trump ordered the National Guard to go in and control the situation. The California governor Gavin Newsom has slammed Trump’s response suggesting he is acting like a ‘dictator’.
A boat carrying aid to Gaza – and a host of well know people such as Greta Thunberg has been intercepted by Israel and diverted away from Gaza. The Israeli authorities says those on board will now be deported. It comes as people across Gaza are starving to death and people are being shot and killed whilst waiting for food at aid centres.
A little closer to home, there’s coverage of Portugal’s win over Spain in the Nations League final – and Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz clinched the French Open in a thriller of a game.
There’s plenty of Premier League transfer gossip filling up the back pages, an news the WSL’s revenue soared during the 2023/24 campaign.
Several media outlets are looking ahead to Wednesday’s Spending Review – highlighting the departments that are set to win (or lose) in the review. Defence is expected to be amongst the winners.
Nurses across England, Wales and Northern Ireland are to vote on a pay rise today – one that unions have slammed as inadequate. There are fears that NHS strikes could be on the table in the coming months.
Nearly 350,000 NHS nurses in England, Wales and Northern Ireland are being asked to vote on a 3.6% pay rise from Monday. The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) has slammed the offer as “grotesque” and warned it could trigger a fresh strike ballot.
This would be the largest vote of its kind among UK nurses, reigniting a bitter pay dispute after historic strikes in 2022-23. The government argues it’s the second above-inflation raise in under a year—critics say it fails to fix a decade of pay erosion. A new wave of NHS industrial action could loom just as the government prepares to unveil its long-term health plan.
The RCN says this vote will help decide whether to formally move to a strike ballot. If members reject the pay offer, industrial action could return later this summer—just as the government prepares to launch its 10-year NHS plan.
Downtown Los Angeles saw chaos as protests against Trump’s immigration crackdown escalated. With over 300 National Guard troops deployed—without the governor’s request—clashes broke out, self-driving cars were torched, and police used rubber bullets and tear gas. Trump inflamed tensions by declaring, “if they spit, we hit,” while LA officials accused him of provoking unrest.
California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the federal intervention as a “dictator move” and demanded troop withdrawal. Trump fired back, mocking state leaders and vowing to expand military presence. With protests continuing and over 100 immigration arrests already made, the standoff over federal versus state power is far from over.
An aid boat carrying climate activist Greta Thunberg and other pro-Palestinian campaigners has been diverted by Israel’s military. The yacht Madleen, part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), was sailing under a British flag with a mission to break Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza when it was intercepted and redirected to Ashdod port.
Israel says those onboard will be deported. Meanwhile, tensions may escalate again as the flotilla group vows to continue its missions. Israel remains firm that no vessel will be allowed to reach Gaza directly, amid an ongoing war that has killed over 1,200 Israelis and, according to Gaza’s health ministry, more than 54,000 Palestinians.
Monday’s newspaper headlines are dominated by a few stories: Government policy, in particular, the upcoming Spending Review, which is set to be released on Wednesday and the clashes between protests and the National Guard in the USA.
A handful of front pages lead with the NHS’s call for more blood donors, whilst the back pages report on football transfer gossip ahead of Tuesday’s deadline, Portugal winning the Nations League and Spain’s Alcaraz winning the French Open.
