    A Joint Session of Congress was convened to certify the election of Joe Biden has gone into an unexpected recess, and the Capitol building into lockdown, after Trump supporters breached security lines.

    Joe Biden has made an impassioned TV address, calling the violent protest at Capitol Hill by Trump supporters as “an assault on democracy…like few times we’ve ever seen it.”

    Trump blocked by Twitter and Facebook

    BBC News says Donald Trump has been suspended from Twitter and Facebook after tweeting to supporters who attacked the US Capitol.

    In a social media message to protesters, he said “I love you” before telling them to go home. He also repeated false claims about election fraud.

    Twitter said it required the removal of three tweets for “severe violations of our Civic Integrity policy”.

    Covid: scale of emergency facing UK laid bare as 1,000 die in 24 hours

    The Guardian says the scale of the health emergency now facing the UK was laid bare on Wednesday night as figures showed that more than 1,000 people had died from the virus in the previous 24 hours and hospitals reported treating a record 30,000 Covid patients.

    The alarming rise in fatalities came two days after the prime minister ordered a draconian new lockdown, which was endorsed overwhelmingly in a Commons vote on Wednesday.

    China goes online to mock ‘beautiful sight’ of US Capitol chaos

    France24 says China’s internet erupted in mirth at America’s troubled democracy after supporters of President Donald Trump broke into the US Capitol, comparing the chaos to the Hong Kong anti-government protests of 2019.

    On Thursday morning, state media tabloid Global Times tweeted side-by-side photo comparisons of Hong Kong protesters occupying the city’s Legislative Council Complex in July 2019 with Wednesday’s Washington riots.

    Israel appoints first diplomat to UAE

    Arab News says Israel has appointed Eitan Naeh to set up a temporary mission in the UAE, newspaper The Times of Israel reported.

    The news of Naeh’s appointment was first carried by Israel’s Kan public broadcaster. The diplomat served as an ambassador in Turkey from 2016 until 2018, when he was expelled by Ankara.

    He will be the first Israeli to receive a full diplomatic status in the UAE and his temporary mission will help establish a permanent embassy.

    India to prioritise Sri Lanka when COVID vaccine ready for export

    Aljazeera says India’s foreign minister has told Sri Lanka’s president that the country will be prioritised when Indian-produced COVID-19 vaccines are ready for export, the president’s office said.

    Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar made the pledge in a meeting with Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in response to the president’s request for vaccines produced in India, Rajapaksa’s office said in a statement on Wednesday.

    Mass evacuations as monsoon floods hit Malaysia

    TRT World says Malaysian villagers have been evacuated in an excavator while others swam through deep waters as the number forced from their homes by floods rose to more than 28,000 with at least four dead.

    Flooding hits the country’s east coast during the rainy season annually and regularly results in mass evacuations, but people in some areas say this year’s are the worst in decades.

    The worst-hit state is Pahang, where over 21,000 have been evacuated in recent days, with almost 4,000 forced from their homes in Johor and thousands more in other states, according to the social welfare department.
