Newcastle United urged to sign ‘upgrade’ David De Gea after Nick Pope injury

Jamie Redknapp has urged Newcastle United to act quickly by signing free agent David De Gea.

Nick Pope has been ruled out for up to five months with a shoulder injury sustained in a 1-0 win against the Red Devils earlier this month.

Martin Dubravka has stood in for the Englishman, but he’s conceded seven in two matches since Pope’s injury.

De Gea left United last summer after 12 years at Old Trafford and he remains a free agent.

The Spaniard, who still resides in the UK, would be open to joining the Magpies.

And Redknapp has urged Eddie Howe to move quickly in a move to sign De Gea – before somebody else does.

‘I would say that bringing in David de Gea for Martin Dubravka would be an upgrade after what he did at Manchester United,’ said Redknapp.

‘How long it would take for him to get up to match speed, who knows. I would say Nick Pope’s injury could take at least five months to heal.

‘It’s a nasty injury, and so when you’ve got a goalkeeper of that quality I would do it and not wait as others might move ahead of you.

‘I’m surprised someone hasn’t taken him already to be honest.’
