Netflix axes Halle Berry sci-fi film over issues with child stars

Netflix has axed Halle Berry’s sci-fi thriller The Mothership after the film was plunged into chaos with several setbacks, including issues around the child stars’ reshoots.

Sci-fi film The Mothership completed filming in 2021 and had been due to arrive on the streaming service, but after multiple delays Netflix has decided to axe the flick altogether.

While filming had been completed, post-production found there was a need for extensive reshoots, particularly for the child cast. But so much time had passed that one of the child stars had aged significantly, making it impossible.

The Mothership starred Halle and the likes of Molly Parker, John Ortiz, Omari Hardwick, Paul Guilfoyle and Sydney Lemmon alongside a host of younger actors.

Colin O’Brien, 14, who has starred in Wonka and Mr Harrigan’s Phone, played Martin, with Spirit Halloween star Jaiden J Smith, now 15, playing Halle’s character’s son, Jake.

The child actors would have been aged around 11 and 12 during filming, but one had noticeably aged by the time reshoots would have been ready to take place, The InSneider reports.

Child star Colin O’Brien also shot scenes; he recently appeared in Wonka as the younger version of the chocolatier (Picture: IMBD)

The Mothership told the story of mother Sara, played by Halley, who is grieving her husband’s sudden disappearance. A year later, she and her children discover an extraterrestrial object underneath their farm, and hope it could lead them to find the missing man.

Netflix’s decision to axe the film will be sure to come as a disappointment, however it’s far from the first time a distributor has cancelled production on a project after filming had finished.

Warner Bros has axed three films that had finished filming in recent years: Batgirl, Coyote vs Acme, and Scoob! Holiday Haunt.

Halle is set to continue working with Netflix however, as she signed a multi-picture deal with the company in 2021 after her sports drama Bruised, which she directed and starred in.

She is currently working on action film The Union which is due to debut on Netflix.

Following the release of Bruised, she praised the Netflix CEOs saying she believed the company would treat it ‘with great care.’

‘The Netflix team has not only been collaborative and creative, but extremely passionate and a delight to work with. I am beyond grateful for the partnership and look forward to telling more stories together.’
