Nadine Dorries delays resignation until peerage information is released
Nadine Dorries has said her resignation as MP is postponed until she acquires more information regarding the reasons behind her denial of a peerage.
Last Friday, Dorries – an ally of Boris Johnson who served in his cabinet, announced her immediate resignation as the MP for Mid Bedfordshire.
Dorries accused PM Rishi Sunak’s team of removing her name from Johnson’s honours list. She took to Twitter to reveal her request for all correspondence related to her removal.
She said she had submitted Subject Access Requests to the House of Lords Appointments Commission (HOLAC), the Cabinet Secretary, and the Cabinet Office. Subject Access Requests enable individuals to obtain copies of their personal data held by government departments.
But under the Data Protection Act 2018, the right of access to personal data does not apply to data processed for the honours system.
In a series of tweets, Dorries mentioned her request for copies of WhatsApp messages, texts, emails, and meeting minutes pertaining to her nomination process for the House of Lords. She stated her intention to carefully review the provided information once she receives it.
She said she fully intends to resing but she considers this process necessary at this point. She said her office will continue to operate normally and she will continue to serve her constituents.
