Mum-of-four suffering ‘torture’ of long Covid wants to end life in Switzerland

A mother-of-four is attempting to raise £10,000 to travel to an assisted dying facility because long Covid has left her in constant pain and unable to care for her children.

Kelly Louise Smith-May, 39, of Chipping Sodbury, first caught coronavirus back in December 2021.

Doctors subsequently diagnosed her with a case of long Covid, reportedly in addition to chronic fatigue syndrome.

After two years of ‘torture’, her family and friends have now set up a fundraising drive to help her travel to Switzerland, where she reportedly plans to end her life at an assisted dying facility.

Kelly Louise’s husband Stuart May told MailOnline he’s had to quit his job to become his wife’s full-time carer.

He said: ‘I had no choice but to give up work and step in and do absolutely everything.

‘People say we’ve got a lovely home but that’s all the stuff we had when Kelly was fit and well.

Kelly-Louise’s GoFundMe page has raised about a third of her target of £10,000 (Picture: GoFundMe)

‘Kelly was very house proud, she wanted the best for her children like any mum. But for more than 18 months she’s been bed-bound – I wash her hair once a month and I have to turn her over.

    ‘She’s in so much pain.’

He went on: ‘Assisted dying is the easy option for Kelly now because she’s given up on all hope.

‘Her friend went and did it and is out of pain and suffering, that’s what she wants.

‘So the option is to go there and end it peacefully. There’s no talk of Kelly wanting to do it herself.

‘It’s her wish, everyone has got that right to do that with some sort of dignity.’

Stuart also told the newspaper the couple haven’t really looked into the potential legal ramifications of Kelly Louise leaving the country to end her life in Switzerland.

Under British law, helping someone take their own life is punishable by up to 14 years in prison.
