MPs to hold confidence vote in Boris Johnson’s government TODAY

MPs will be holding a vote of confidence in the Government today as the opposition continues to call for Boris Johnson to step down immediately and hand the role over to a caretaker prime minister.

Boris Johnson called this vote of confidence in his own government after Labour attempted to table a confidence vote – it was rejected by the government over wording.

The Labour motion was tabled after the PM announced he would be stepping down following mass resignations of his MPs over the Chris Pincher scandal. The prime minister raised eyebrows when he announced he would stay in the role of PM until the autumn – when a new party leader, and therefore PM, would be elected.

    • The PM’s changing story over Chris Pincher

The Labour motion was denied by the government as the wording effectively forced Tory MPs to go on record stating they still had confidence in Mr Johnson if they wanted to avoid a general election.

If the government loses today’s vote, it will trigger a general election, but that would require a significant number of Tory MPs to vote against it – or at least abstain.

It’s fairly unlikely due to the fact the party is leaderless and in no fit state to fight an election, and the wave of anger towards Boris Johnson has started to subside.

It might prove to be the final chance the PM has to defend his record after a premier marred by scandals – which ultimately led to his downfall.

Boris Johnson had been expected to open the debate – although it’s not now clear whether he will.

Ahead of the vote, Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey, who has tabled an amendment demanding Mr Johnson resign immediately, said: “Conservatives MPs have the chance to show they are listening to the people by getting rid of this failing Prime Minister.

“Boris Johnson should go now and, when a new Conservative leader is in place, we should have a general election so that people can kick out these Conservatives once and for all.”
